Just what is the purpose of K-12 education? What should a school strive to accomplish in the education of each child? Not all schools agree. If you feel strongly about certain developmental goals for your child, it might help to see which schools share your thinking. A school’s developmental priorities often gets reflected in both its classrooms and community culture.
We asked schools to identify their priorities by choosing a “primary” and “secondary” priority out of six options. You can see their choices by reading their school profiles on OurKids.net.
The goal is to cultivate “academically strong, creative, and critical thinkers, capable of exercising rationality, apprehending truth, and making aesthetic distinctions.” 54% of schools have this as one of their priorities.
The goal is to cultivate “socially aware and active citizens, motivated to change the world (or their community) for the better.” 14% of schools have this as one of their two priorities.
The goal is to cultivate “individuals with inner resources, strong faith, and respect for God or a higher power.” 6% of schools have this as one of their two priorities.
The goal is to cultivate “emotionally intelligent and confident individuals, capable of leading both themselves and others.” 15% of schools have this as one of their two priorities.
The goal is to cultivate “strong, flexible-bodied, and active individuals, in tune with the joys of movement, sport, and wellness.” 4% of schools have this as one of their two priorities.
“Equal emphasis is placed on a balance of priorities: intellectual, emotional, social, and physical cultivation.” 75% of schools have this as one of their two priorities.
