Autism Camps

Camps across Ontario and Quebec offer specialised support and programs for kids with autism or autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

These camps make a big difference in the lives of children and help families dealing with autism as well as related disorders, Asperger's Syndrome and Rett's Syndrome. Children benefit immensely from time outdoors interacting with other children and getting the full summer camp experience. Once the school year is over, autism camps can help children spend vacation time in a fruitful manner and hone communication skills. These camps focus on therapy for kids with special needs and provide a much-needed respite for kids and their families.

Autism camps are held during all vacation periods including summer, March break and the Christmas holiday. Children at autism camps can experience a range of activities customized to their needs. The counselor-to-camper ratio is usually high at these camps, in order to offer children sufficient attention. Counselors at autism camps will have extensive training in dealing with autistic children.

Social skill development, music, arts and crafts, nature activities, games, sports, contests, trips, special events, theme days and more are also an important part of kids camp. Children with autism may not be able to participate in sports that require coordination and reading subtle social cues. However, there are many physical activities at camp that are enjoyable and contribute to an autistic child's sensory processing, motor and social skills.

Autism camps are a great idea as campers are given a chance to participate in a wide variety of activities in a language-rich and socially-supportive environment. All activities are tailored to meet individual needs and encourage group play, social interaction and an appreciation of nature. These camps provide children with some of the same routines they may be used to at school.

Some autism camps also incorporate integrated therapy.

Learn more from specific autism-specialized camps listed below, who will be able to tell you exactly what value they add to the lives of autistic children in their care.
