Alternative Elementary Schools

Find a list of schools

Private alternative elementary schools refer to many different sorts of institutions, all of which have different approaches from mainstream education. Parents may choose to send their children to alternative schools for a variety of reasons, including the school's educational philosophy, its class structure, or parents' dissatisfaction with other schools. In many cases, the general outlook of a particular alternative school best suits the a student’s unique needs.

Sending your child to an alternative private school in his or her early years of education will put him or her in an environment conducive to success. Many parents have begun to recognize the importance of a child’s first experiences in school, as they play a major role in his or her intellectual development.

Private alternative schools come in many different forms. Here are some of them…

  • Arrowsmith schools deal with learning disabilities through a series of cognitive exercises intended to bolster the areas of the brain where a given disability stems from.
  • Waldorf schools (sometimes called Steiner education) make learning a multi-faceted pursuit that encompasses numerous skills. For example, your son or daughter will not always be at a desk and some classroom time is spent using many parts of their bodies for learning activities.
  • Schools for gifted children provide enriched programs to students who are academically well above average.
  • Montessori schools strongly believe in self-directed student learning. Teachers here encourage children in self-directed learning and in mentoring each other.

Paying for Alternative Schools

Private elementary schools have wide-ranging tuition costs and schools strive to become more affordable and accessible to a broader cross section of the public. There are also many ways to get help paying for private school tuition, such as:

  • If a private school deems you are in financial need and that your child would benefit from attending their school, then it might help you through financial aid.
  • Chartable organizations might also assist you in paying for private school.
  • Tax breaks for private education are available if the school offers a religious curriculum or if it educates students with special needs.
  • Check out Our Kids’ 18 Tips on "Paying Private School Tuition."
Our Kids’ annual private school expos will give you an excellent and thorough introduction to private alternative elementary schools. Here, you will meet face to face with representatives from many of these institutions.
