Detailed list of symptoms of Asperger's Syndrome
Impairments of communication:
- Peculiarities of speech and language

Overly formalized speech patterns

Flat, expressionless monotone speaking, often times too loud

Overly literal interpretation of words and phrases

Inability to recognize idioms
Impairments of interaction with others
- One-sided monologues regardless of listener interest

Inappropriate comments

Poor listening skills or lack of interest in what others say

Difficulty initiating conversation or engaging in dialogue

Poor response to direct address

Lack of eye contact
-
Complete lack of interest in facial expressions or body language

Poor awareness of personal space

Ignorance or neglect of previously agreed upon rules

Lack of empathy with others
Impairments of social imagination
- Narrowness of interests, often manifest as a singular preoccupation

Withdrawal or aloofness

Eccentric personality

Preoccupation with an internal agenda

Preoccupation with small errors by others

Highly repetitive in play or manner

Of course, not all of these are indicative of Asperger's Syndrome but the presence of many of these signs or a conflagration of symptoms across all three of the impairments listed above could very well be cause for concern. Asperger's Syndrome manifests in a wisely varied manner from one child to another but repetition, poorly relating with others and eccentric speech or conversation abilities (or lack thereof) are often found.
