Marina Jiménez of The Globe and Mail investigates the benefits of single-sex schools on boys and girls. The catalyst of the article was a report from the University of California that compared the academic performance of girls in girls-only independent and Catholic schools in the United States. It found that girls had higher SAT scores, a greater interest in graduate school and higher academic self-confidence, especially in mathematical ability and computer skills. It also found that female graduates are more politically engaged.
Jiménez expands on the report by also looking at how single-sex school might benefit boys who often have more behavioural issues and are less likely to go to university when compared to female students.
These two reports do demonstrate that in some circumstances single-sex schools or having some specific single-sex classes may have an advantage depending on the student. As this debate between co-educational and single-sex education continues, it still remains that choosing a private or independent school is a very individual decision based on your child and your family’s goals, needs and values.
