“Hanging” out in the Aerial Park @ Camp Muskoka

It was a beautiful Monday afternoon; the sun was shining, the wind was blowing, and most importantly, the bugs weren’t biting. On the first full day of the beginning of Camp Muskoka’s 2010 Summer Camp season, we headed off; water bottles in hand and maybe even a drop of sweat upon our brow. Before we knew it, we were standing below the towering structure that is our Aerial Park. hanging out on a zipline at an Ontario summer campWhile initially intimidating, after a brief but informative lesson about safety equipment and belaying, we were off to conquer the sky (or at least, the tops of the trees).

Not only is the Aerial Park a total blast, but it’s designed to challenge individuals both physically and mentally; participants must face several different forms of aerial obstacles throughout the course, including tires, rolling logs, swinging ropes, and more. In fact, that’s just the tip of the iceberg; there are several different routes that can be taken throughout the course (each with varying difficulty), as well as three separate access points that can be used as entrances or exits.

Sounds good, doesn’t it? Well, like most things, the best is yet to come – I’ve yet to mention my favourite part of Camp Muskoka’s Aerial Park: the zipline. In fact, Camp Muskoka boasts the longest zipline over water in all of Ontario. So not only are you zooming down a cable with full range of motion, but you’re doing it over picturesque Muskoka territory. What could be better?

Now, let me tell you: coming from someone who’s absolutely terrified of heights (yes, I’m not ashamed to admit it), this was still a truly amazing experience. Believe me – the thought of being suspended 30 feet in the air by nothing but a few ropes and cables wasn’t exactly my idea of a picnic, but after having done it first-hand, I can’t wait to go back. I won’t say I wasn’t scared, and just because I’m significantly older than most of our summer campers doesn’t mean that I wasn’t as challenged, but the course itself is all about pushing yourself to be all you can be – something I know I accomplished that memorable day.

In conclusion, the Aerial Park offers a mind-blowing and unforgettable experience that helps build not only confidence but character. All I can say is, I can’t wait to do it all again. Everyone should be given the opportunity to push themselves, not just at camp, but on a daily basis in everyday life.

That’s all for now folks, stay tuned for more stories from Camp Muskoka! :)
