For over 100 years Appleby College has been encouraging their students to discover and embrace their passions, to try new activities and explore new ideas both inside and outside of the classroom. Find out more here and at their Open Houses on Saturday, October 20th, Saturday, October 27th, and Saturday, November 24th, 2012!
Appleby College is located on a beautiful 60-acre campus in Oakville, Ontario, 30 minutes west of Toronto, with easy access to GO Transit’s Lakeshore line, allowing students from Hamilton on the west and Scarborough on the east safe, convenient access to the school.
Founded in 1911, this coeducational school for students in Grades 7–12 has a wide range of academic courses to offer, including more than 20 Advanced Placement courses, over 100 clubs and co-curricular programs, and a sprawling Northern campus in Temagami which provides students unlimited learning opportunities in the classroom and beyond.
With 725 students (275 boarding students and 400 day students), Appleby continually offers students an experience unlike any other. The school has been recognized for their commitment to global education with an exceptional focus on languages, global issues and international service programs. This fits with their mission, which Michael O’Connor, Chief Marketing and Enrollment Officer states “is to educate young men and women to become leaders of character, major contributors to, and valued members of their local, national and international communities.”
One of Appleby’s signature programs is the Appleby College Diploma with Distinction in Global Leadership, described by Michael as follows: “Appleby was the first boarding school in North America to offer a specific diploma programme that incorporates academic, co-curricular and experiential learning into a holistic educational experience that emphasizes global and cultural understanding. At the conclusion of the programme the students prepare a Global Action Plan that is both a reflection on their experiences at Appleby as well as a plan for their future.”
In addition, this past July, Innes van Nostrand joined Appleby as the School’s 7th Principal/Headmaster in its 101 year history. Innes has not only been recognized as one of Canada’s leading independent school administrators but also brings a strong reputation for developing and nurturing community relationships. For example, during his previous work at Upper Canada College he strengthened UCC’s Alumni and Parent networks across Canada and around the world, as well as working as the Director of Alumni Affairs at Queen’s University.
The school’s atmosphere is described as being an incredibly warm and welcoming community where students are encouraged to be themselves and where success is celebrated regardless if it’s in the classroom, on a sports team or in a school play. It’s also home to over 150 international students from over 35 different countries, reflecting the diversity of a city like Toronto and the wider world.
With such a diverse student body, what types of students flourish at Appleby College? “Students who are passionate about learning, who get involved. Current students and Alumni quite often tell me that ‘You can’t be a passive by-stander at Appleby. The faculty and your peers won’t let you. Appleby offers students incredible learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom but in return it demands a lot” says Michael.
He also suggests that parents consider Appleby College for their child’s education because “Appleby provides students with the opportunity to discover and unleash their passions. We appreciate that every child is unique and that it takes a unique blend of support, motivation, challenge and connection to unlock their potential. As a school community we are truly inspired by our students’ accomplishments, but even more so by what they do after they graduate. Over 95% of our students get accepted into their university of choice. Universities that are amongst the most prestigious in Canada and around the world; Oxford, Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, Western, Queen’s, McGill and the University of Toronto.”
A testimonial from Principal Innes van Nostrand speaks to his first reaction upon visiting Appleby and what a difference he has seen it make in the lives of its students: “As a newcomer to Appleby, I was initially struck by the beauty of the campus in Oakville. As I have gotten to know the school better, I have come to appreciate what is even more important and impressive about the School, and that is the sense of community — a hallmark of which is the unique day/boarding blend. I am impressed by the contagious enthusiasm with which recent graduates and their families talk about their time at Appleby, how well prepared they were for university, and how they have a family of Appleby brothers and sisters that will always be a part of their lives. Most of all, they describe how their Appleby College experience has inspired them to pursue their own dreams and to live their lives with meaning and purpose.”

“Appleby has offered me so many wonderful opportunities to experience the world around me, from going on a service trip to Nicaragua, to travelling with the rugby team to Harvard, Brown and Yale, I have so many positive memories. There is really nothing that can compare to the feeling that you get going to a school where being yourself is not only expected, but celebrated.” —Zach Williams ‘13
