I stumbled upon a TED video with John Hardy talking about his dream school – The Green School. After some investigating, I realized that his dream was very similar to the Waldorf Schools. The philosophy, concept, the design. Even the wooden chairs and tables looked familiar. One thing. It isn’t Hardy’s dream anymore. It’s his reality.

Why Waldorf works has more to do with how the brain develops and functions optimally than Rudolf Steiner ever could have known. Sure the educator and founder of Waldorf Education theorized convincingly about how children learn best, but until MRIs and other sophisticated measures of the brain were developed, we had no way to prove or disprove any of Steiner’s theories, not with the kind of precision and accuracy we can now. An overwhelming body of evidence from the last 20 years of neuroscientific inquiry supports Steiner’s theories, including some of the most fundamental foci of Waldorf Education.
As I continue to hear about what could be a very sad future for many kids in America, I tend to feel thankful that I went to school in Canada, at a school like Waldorf. We, like the extra-nice Canadians we are, always tried to help others make it, to get a better education in an unique schooling environment. It worked. I’m trying to spread awareness about Waiting for Superman and how to help out. The sad truth of what is going on abroad has hit home. In Canada.
My nephew recently moved closer to my mother and I. He moved from Oakville. With the move, the little guy also had to switch schools. He went from daycare to a Montessori school. Yeah. The “M” word.
