Campground cooking

Camping trips are as much about eating over an open fire as they are experiencing the great outdoors—and the equipment (or lack thereof) is all part of the fun! It’s amazing what kids will eat if they have cooked it themselves, and believe it or not, the only tools you really need are a bowl, spoon, knife, a few sticks and some tin foil. Oh, and let’s not forget a campfire!

Cooking for your children over an open fire. So, whether you’re perched on a rock in the remote wilderness of Northern Quebec or dining at the picnic table in your own backyard, here some tasty campground treats sure to please your little city slickers wherever they are.

Meal Mashers
For dinner, have everyone toss their favourite ingredients into individual foil packets. Just lay out several food choices, such as sliced potatoes, carrots, red peppers, cheese, meat and beans, plus some salt and pepper. Seal up each packet and toss them into the hot embers of a well burning fire. Keep in mind, they will be piping hot when you pluck them out, so have your long stick at the ready and let them cool before serving.

Skewered Octo-Dogs
Take a bunch of hot dogs and cut them in half lengthwise, starting from the middle and through to the end. Roll it over and cut again on the same end. This will create several hotdog ‘tentacles.’ Skewer a stick through the uncut end and cook over an open fire as you normally would. As the legs cook they will curl back, creating a sort of crazy looking octopus that tastes delicious with a bit of ketchup!

Chocolate Banana Surprise
First, cut a long slit lengthwise in an unpeeled banana—be careful not to cut through to the bottom. Pry it open with your fingers and fill with chocolate chips and mini marshmallows; wrap in foil and nestle into the hot coals until it’s warmed through, and the chocolate and marshmallows are melted. Yum!

Cinnamon Swirlers
Pack a tube of premade cinnamon buns or crescent roles. Pop it open and wrap each doughy strip around a clean stick. Heat over fire until puffed up and cooked through. For added sweetness, dip it in the accompanying packet of icing!
