Camping in Comfort

The heat is on! And campers are feeling it. Camp Wenonah says on Facebook “Another hot day ahead of us at Camp. We are staying cool though with many dips in Clear Lake,” while Glenbrook Day Camp‘s status reads”Day 4: 1st overnight = success; HOT HOT HOT!!!”

Roughing it in the woods is already hard enough for many people who like the luxuries of home, let alone camping in temperatures in the mid-30′s without any air conditioning! Usually, the outdoor experience is limited to the backyard pool or meals on a restaurant patio. But luckily, a new industry is emerging to cater to those yearning to be outside but just can’t stand to live without modern amenities.

A camper would love to sleep under the stars, but not a glamper.

A glamper's worst nightmare

Combine “glamour” and “camping” and you get “glamping.”Gone are the days of heading into the outdoors with nothing but a match, a flashlight, and the clothes on your back. The can’t-live-without items for glampers include cashmere socks, duvets, hair straighteners, and blow-up sofas. Even brand-name designers are creating their own camping lines, including retro-patterned tents, silk-lined sleeping bags, vintage-inspired rain gear and water bottles, tiger-print blow up mattresses, even shelters like tipis and Moroccan-style yurts. Even Chanel has designed its own fishing rod.

Even gourmet cooking has a place on the glampsite. With tabletop grills, heat-and-serve slow cookers, propane driven skillets, and portable ovens, just bring along a linen table cloth and a few candleholders and you’ll be the guests of honor at the ground’s trendiest restaurant. Campsites themselves are joining in on the trend. Some in Australia and the United States offer hot tubs, babysitting facilities, spas, and WiFi. And there are many travel blogs dedicated exclusively to helping users plan the perfect glamping trip anywhere around the world, from Ontario, to Ireland, to Tanzania.

The glamping trend began in the UK’s celebrity culture, which took its cue from chic models and actresses like Kate Moss and Sienna Miller who made sure they kept their amenities close by as they camped out at the region’s many outdoor music festivals. And the trend has since hopped the pond and is taking serious root in the U.S. and Canada. With tough economic times, luxury lovers are skipping out on the usual tropical resorts to stay closer to home, and glamping offers an affordable alternative to more lavish and costly getaways.

While die-hard campers may see this as a travesty, others see it as the perfect introduction into reconnecting with the great outdoors. For kids who are reliant on technology and the comforts of home, putting them in a traditional camp setting could turn a family’s dream vacation into a natural nightmare. Bare-bones camping is not for everyone, and glamping just offers another option for others to get outside that normally wouldn’t.

Interested in a glamping trip for your family but can’t afford to live like British royalty? Here’s a do-it-yourself list of tips to create your own comfy campsite.

Glamping Packing List:
- A large tent is critical. Choose one that is sturdy and big enough to walk into. Bonus points if it comes in a fun color or cute print.
- Forget the sleeping bag. Instead, pack blankets, comforters and pillows from home to create a soft, inviting place to sleep.
- Bring along a few rugs to cover the plastic floor the tent creates. Plastic mats or indoor/outdoor doormats placed outside the tent entrance keep dirt from tracking inside.
- Include a few special amenities to add to a food prep setup. All of the following items up the glam quotient: portable grill, retro-style cooler, printed dishtowels and girly apron.
- For a better dining experience, replace standard camping tableware with these fun choices: fabric table linens in a pretty print, dishes in kitschy patterns (no paper plates) and vases for a centerpiece of flowers picked on site.
- Consider lighting for the nighttime. A campfire is essential but other stylish gear such as battery-operated or electronic lanterns and votive candles in glass holders add a glamorous touch.

You can get to some beautiful places whilst Glamping. Try the lovely Hebridean island of Canna for example: http://www.caravan-news.co.uk/articles/canna-gl...
