Beijing surprised me.

Modern architecture in Beijing, China
I did not expect such a modern and clean city (nor did I expect the city traffic!). The modern architecture in the city centre was an interesting juxtaposition to the ancient buildings of The Forbidden City.

Classical architecture in The Forbidden City
Tian’anmen Square once again reminded me of the command and control nature of government in China.
After our delegation’s visit to the HANBAN Headquarters we had the opportunity to visit a secondary school. With class sizes approaching 50 students, the mode of instruction was definitely teacher-

centered. The school day is quite long for the students, with most of them arriving at 7:30 AM for an hour of extra study. Classes run until 6:00 PM but the day is interspersed with physical exercise breaks.
At the end of the day however, kids are kids!

Secondary School in China
Throughout the time visiting schools I was struck by the seriousness with which the students take their studies. Education is valued very highly in China and competition for places in post-secondary education is stiff. Throughout our trip I was also most impressed with the level of English spoken by students, both at the secondary and

elementary level. This facility in English is a result of the school system for I did not hear much English spoken elsewhere.
My next post will consider English language instruction in the elementary division.
