Ashbury College is raising funds to build a rooftop garden for their theatre building. To be called the Green Roof Learning Centre, this student-lead initiative will become a central place for outdoor learning within their campus.
The Learning Centre will be planted with four distinct sections: native grasses, native herbs, native flowers and vegetables.
Ashbury expects a number of great rewards from their green roof. From their website:
Educational benefits:
- Students will develop social awareness and learn about ethical responsibility to the world.
- Students can learn and experience environmental studies in a real life environment.
- The junior and senior school environmental clubs will have additional tools and resources to advocate for the environment.
- The Green Roof Learning Centre will aid the cross-curriculum focus between math, science, geography, visual arts, biology, water and energy efficiency studies.
- Students can help to create and maintain a stable, living ecosystem and urban wildlife habitat.
Community benefits and outreach:
- Green roofs absorb noise and air pollution, while providing the community with additional oxygen production.
- Implementing green roof technology contributes to a cooler city.
- The Learning Centre will provide community groups the opportunity to experience a green roof, learn about its benefits and promote overall awareness of environmental responsibility.
- Students will have an opportunity to give back to the community by participating in programs such as gardening vegetables for donation to local food banks, soup kitchens and homeless shelters.
The community would be able to access the space to host local events, receptions, meetings, etc.
