From Laurentian Academy in Val-Morin, QC:
In mid-October, our International students took part in Global Perspectives Day, an event organized by Cambridge University International Examinations. The day started in New Zealand and relayed around the world, from Cambridge centre to Cambridge centre.
Global Perspectives Day was organized as an opportunity for students in 30 Cambridge centres around the world to interact and exchange ideas.
When our time came, our students and their teacher were ready and began their exchanges with other online students, from a variety of countries, using a Web site format designed by them and a chat format.
Some of the students have written about their experiences. We are excited to share them here.
Aron: I mostly took part in the direct chatting with other Global Perspectives students, but also in some of the forums, which were interesting and gave me some ideas for my portfolio…. It would be a very good idea to do this again, we could check with other Global students regarding what they wrote on specific topics.
Emil: I joined three main activities – chatting, writing comments and, reading newspaper articles – which dealt with ‘Conflict and Peace’, ‘Family’, and ‘Tradition, Culture and Language’. I chose the subject ‘Family’, and ‘Tradition, Culture and Language’ and chatted with people from all over the world.
Suyang: I had a chat with some students about my project – ‘Tradition, Culture and Language’. I learned interesting information for my project and exchanged comments with other students.”
Noemi: I took part in chatting with people around the world. I also went to the forums on the site. I think the activity that I enjoyed the most was talking with people from around the world, I got to know about some other countries – some people even wished they lived in Canada rather than where they lived now.
Congratulations to Laurentian Academy for being a part of this exciting program.
Do you think that online student exchanges work? What is the value for a student in participating in something like the Global Perspectives Day?
If you have links to other programs that involve online exchanges we would love to hear about them.
