School's Out: Considering Camps

Joshua Tusin

With summer fast approaching, and March break arriving even sooner, it’s a good time to think about what our kids are going to be doing when school is not in session. Camps are often a good answer because of the many great experiences – both social and educational – that are on offer.

Kevin Callan writes about taking a class outdoors and despite his warning, one student found himself on the receiving end of some porcupine pee… some kind of education! But at the same time, the incredible outdoor experience he shared with his students probably made a lifetime impression (and not just the porcupine incident).

Over on Cottage Life, one of their bloggers recalls how for her children, camps were a way better experience than going to the cottage. Even if children don’t use the specific skills they learn at camp – say, paddling a canoe – very often, the life skills of teamwork, appreciation of nature and so on are invaluable.

We spend a lot of time making sure our children get the best possible education throughout the school year. Whether it is March break camps a couple weeks from now or something this summer, there’s no doubt that camping is a great option to consider.

Comments

  1. The cottage was always the best experience, but camp was a close second and tops in the ways you mention.

  2. Stephanie says:

I went to summer camp when I was a teenager and I think it’s one of the best experiences a parent can offer their children. The activities and sports you experience, the friends that you make and the responsibility of having to take care of yourself are things that I’ll never forget. I am a far better person today because of my experiences at camp.

What I would tell EVERY parent — send your kids to camp. They’ll love it and you’ll love the changes you see in them!
