What do NBA mega-star Steve Nash, Team Canada Rugby star Ed Fairhurst, Flickr co-Founder Stuart Butterfield and Victoria, BC all have in common? St. Michaels University School of course! You’re invited to check out their old stomping grounds at the February 17 St. Michaels University School Open House!

An unforgettable event recently took place on at SMUS. The school double gym was packed to the brim with spectators as some of the best athletes in St. Michaels University School history took to the basketball court. When coach Ian Hyde-Lay announced that a “certain alumnus” may be returning to SMUS for the alumni basketball game, everyone hoped it would be the one and only Steve Nash.
Attendance numbers for the Alumni vs. Senior Boys team basketball game were incredible, and a capacity crowd of over 900 people was star-struck and thrilled when alumnus Steve Nash ’92, Canadian Olympian and two-time NBA MVP made a start on the back court alongside brother Martin Nash ’93. From Eric Kidd ’83 to Jamie Yorath ’10, the Alumni team featured a depth of talent spanning almost three decades. Danny Boticki ’99, who went on to an impressive NCAA career at Idaho State and then played professionally for five years in Europe, electrified fans with a spectacular backdoor alley-oop dunk attempt.
Despite disappointing results for the Senior Boys, it was still a thrillingexperience to have the honour of playing against some of the greatest athletes in school history. The game was definitely an amazing way to kick off the 2011-2012 basketball season!
Although often recognized for its celebrity athletes and famous alumni, St. Michaels University School also has a global reputation for its academic performance and excellence. With the largest and most successful Advanced Placement program in Canada, SMUS is a school of solid formation.
