How does St. Michaels University School empower students to seek excellence with passion and compassion and find the path that’s right for them? Find out at their open house on Friday, February 15th, 2013!
With an impressive roster of celebrity athletes such as NBA superstar Steve Nash and Team Canada Rugby star Ed Fairhurst, plus other famous alumni including Flickr co-Founder Stuart Butterfield, the school is consistently recognized for excellent academic performance and it’s obvious that their message rings true!
The school has the largest and most successful Advanced Placement program in Canada, which allows high-school students to earn university level credits while still in high-school. With different 24 AP courses offered, more SMUS students write AP exams than at any other school in Canada.
Most recently, the school was ranked as the number-one school in Canada for “equity and excellence” in the Advanced Placement® (AP) program and in the top 60 worldwide. Compared to nearly 600 Canadian schools, SMUS scored highest in the country for student access to the AP program combined with the exam results they achieve. Worldwide, SMUS ranks in the top 60 of 18,000 schools that offer the Advanced Placement program, which offers high school students college-level courses and the chance to earn university credits. Founded in 1906, the school boasts 923 students with boarding students originating from 19 countries—46 per cent of which come from outside of North America!
The goal of the St. Michaels University School philosophy is to help each student find and develop the path that’s right for them, then foster that path with the guidance and resources they need. “Each student at SMUS is encouraged to find their own potential and explore their role in the world,” states Paul Leslie, Director of Admissions for SMUS. This philosophy has led them to become one of the most learner-centered university preparatory environments in Canada.
According to Paul, “The students who thrive at St. Michaels University School are a diverse group. Part of our school philosophy is the idea that anyone can be a leader, and our student body demonstrates this by the wide ranges of talents, personalities, and interests that they bring. We accept students who are committed to their education, but who also crave new experiences and want to challenge themselves beyond the classroom. Academics is our focus and each student is expected to reach their full potential in their course load, but we also value other things—athletic skills, artistic talent, fundraising passion, business acumen—and see each student as an individual with their own set of strengths and own way to contribute to school life.”
Upon visiting the beautiful campus in Victoria, B.C., you’ll notice that the co-ed day (K-12) and boarding (Grades 8-12) school lives up to its elegant reputation. Its location, “brings a great mix of big city and small town from its spot in the heart of Victoria, B.C.,” says Paul. “Our campus is close enough to downtown that students are 20 minutes away from movie theatres, art galleries, all-ages concerts and a wide array of restaurants, while they also enjoy the quiet and safety of a residential area. Boarding students can explore our city on their own and through organized activities with their house parents and housemates.”
Mr. Leslie goes on to describe the school atmosphere as one, “infused with the spirit of possibility. Our campus is overflowing with sports, clubs, special guest speakers, university admissions events and much more. Students are friendly and welcoming, and with multiple cultures represented in the student body, our school carries an international feel. Step on our campus, and you will sense the energy that we feel every day.”
What are parents’ impressions of the school? Paul states, “What our parents appreciate most about our school are the tremendous amount of support each child receives and the incredible opportunities their children have, from volunteering across the world to kayaking up the Vancouver Island Coast. In our 2010 parent survey, 89% of parents rated their general satisfaction with the school as either high or very high. For 92% of parents, SMUS was their first choice school and our academics program was the highest rated in satisfaction (92%).”
You can’t beat those numbers! Mr. Leslie confirms that their graduates, “continually impress us with the breadth of the post-secondary studies.” Universities in Canada and all over the world accept St. Michaels University School graduates and, in the past five years, SMUS grads have been accepted to Cambridge, Dalhousie, Harvard, McGill, Oxford, the University of Toronto and the University of St. Andrews. “From the Rhode Island School of Design to the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, our students often directly pursue the passions they discovered while at our school.”
