Students Get Involved in National Cancer Connections Project

Do you know someone that has cancer? Your answer is likely yes. The stark reality that cancer touches us all, some more closely than others, is frightening. The Canadian Cancer Society reports that 38% of Canadian women and 44% of Canadian men will develop cancer during their lifetime. Rising trends make these statistics even more disturbing. One photographer walking into a classroom and asking young students if they know someone with cancer is what initiated a remarkable project entitled Cancer Connections, and now hundreds of students are getting on board to share their stories and contribute to this national initiative.

St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School has taken the lead in launching the PhotoSensitive Cancer Connections photography project within the Conference of Independent Schools (CIS) and Canadian Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) community (view invitation letter). Recognizing that the project combines many aspects of curriculum, while reaching out to the broader community both locally and nationally, I hope more schools implement this project and get involved.

A kit for teachers and students will be available through St. Mildred’s to assist with the introduction of the project in your school in August/September, however the project is open to everyone, not just schools. Photos can be submitted on a wide range of subjects:  people who have survived cancer, those who have lost friends or family to the disease or people involved in the fight against it.

About PhotoSensitive

PhotoSensitive is an incredible organization (I know this because the co-founder also happens to be my father). Since 1990 the not for profit  group has been using the power of black and white photography to raise public consciousness of critical issues around the globe, from homelessness in Canada to AIDS in Africa, the photos and stories take you into a world many of us could never even dream about. Leading photographers from across the country volunteer their time to bring awareness to issues they feel so strongly about. The new Cancer Connections project is unique as it invites US (the general public non-professional photographers) to submit photos and have them included in a traveling outdoor exhibition.

I encourage everyone to get involved. Submit a photo and share your story.
