Black History Month: Kids on Freedom and Secretly Saving Slaves

Students sing “Wade in the Water/Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" during their annual Black History Month assembly at Richland Academy in Richmond Hill, Ontario.

If Zachary had been alive during the time of slavery, he would secretly take the slaves to Canada by boat or by foot. “Before I started saving slaves, I might have been one myself, so I would know how hard it is,” says the Grade 5 student. He and his fellow classmates at Richland Academy opened their eyes about the significant events, issues and people for Black History Month. Read more and watch the videos.

Creativity – Are We Failing Our Kids?

The Toronto Globe and Mail of Friday, Jan. 28, 2011 featured an article by Anne McIlroy titled Neuroscientists try to unlock the origins of creativity. In this article Anne poses the question “Does studying art and music make children more creative in math and problem solving? How do you train a young brain to make it more flexible?” Ken Robinson says schools kill creativity. If you have not seen Sir Ken’s 19 minute TED talk I would highly recommend that you do so. Robinson suggests that “creativity is as important as literacy in education” and I believe that creativity is one important characteristic that will enable our kids to be competitive in the global economy of the future.

Backstage Notes: We Love Ya, Annie!

Get a behind-the-scenes look at the productions of private schools and summer programs.

The Lodge was transformed into a performance space for our production of Annie. The show was a phenomenal success, and enjoyed by all in attendance.After the final performance on Friday, as students helped us to tidy up backstage, many words of praise and thanks were exchanged; however, the most common sentiment expressed by the students was a simple, “That was fun!” I couldn’t have summed it up better myself.
