We all want our kids to grow up to be socially responsible and harbor compassion for their fellow man. And the holidays are a great time of year to show them how to do just that. ‘Tis the season for giving and you can help them most by setting a good example. Donation is an activity that comes in many forms, but if you’ve never done it before, you may not have the first idea about where to start or what to do (much less how to get your kids involved). But there are plenty of options when it comes to extending a helping hand to those who are less fortunate. So if you’re looking for a way to teach your kids a valuable lesson about charity this holiday season, here are a few ways you can get the whole family together to give something back.

One of the best ways to give to others in need is to take up a donation. Shelters (homeless, battered women, etc.) always appreciate donations of cash, food, blankets, and even clothing for their residents, and aside from scouring your own home (or hitting the stores), you can go door-to-door in your neighborhood to secure additional goods. And many families that aren’t quite destitute can still benefit from programs that donate gifts to kids (you can often donate through a local church or school). But it’s not just kids who need help during the holidays. After you drop off your collections to the appropriate programs, take a few items over to the area animal shelter. Old linens can be used for bedding and they can always use kitten and puppy food. You may even be able to petition markets or pet stores to help with your donation.
Another option is to volunteer your time and talents. Whether you and the kids opt to work the line at a soup kitchen, take Christmas to needy families (by setting up trees, bringing gifts, and handing over the fixings for a holiday feast), or stretch your range by singing carols, reading stories, or acting out skits at shelters, hospitals, or elder-care facilities, you can spread the joy of the season by simply giving your time. In some cases, this is worth even more than material gifts for people who find themselves alone this holiday season.
If you don’t have a lot of extra time or money to spend on these types of pursuits, you can still do something good for everyone on the planet by giving back to the Earth. Getting your kids on board with recycling and using less energy around the house is an excellent way to instill them with an eco-friendly attitude that could help all of us in the long run. And if the kids are really into it, you could even take cans and bottles to the recycling center and donate the proceeds to charity, effectively teaching them two lessons in one. But however you choose to give back this season, just be sure your kids know how lucky they are to have a home and a family that loves them so that they understand the value of the gift they are giving to others.
