University of Toronto Schools at 100

One of Toronto’s most academically known private schools is certainly the University of Toronto Schools (UTS), and as they approach their centennial, it’s both an exciting and nervous time on campus. The Globe and Mail artfully illustrates the great achievements of UTS students but also the great challenges that lie ahead for the storied institution.

While parents still sometimes go to great lengths to help their children earn entrance to UTS, the school itself faces an unchartered financial future.

Nobody questions whether or not the students graduating from UTS are well trained and educated. They routinely advance to top universities, including in the Ivy Leagues or with prestigous scholarships. But as the University of Toronto withdraws its financial support (it remains affiliated), UTS finds itself funding all expenses through student tuition.

The tuition, is currently set at $15,900. And the school is housed in an aging building badly in need of repair – but owned by the University of Toronto. If I were a UTS alumnus, I would be expecting a few more donation requests in my mailbox.

There’s no doubt that the UTS brand is strong and its alumni ranks powerful, but in the face of a withering economy, these are challenging times for the private school. Of course, when we look at the broader picture through the lens of today’s economic realities, it isn’t just UTS that will be looking ahead with a certain amount of trepidation.
