At my school, there is ongoing discussion about the awkwardness of when you are introducing yourself to people and having to say “I go to The Dragon Academy,” when they ask what school you go to.
I have heard of many instances where it was misconstrued for a school of Karate. A continual joke seems to be that it is a school of magic.
It is neither. It is “just” a private school. Although the school’s name is very far from what you would call a normal school name, I think that to be ‘normal’ at Dragon would be to be unusual, and the name is just an extension of that.
But that wasn’t the sole reason for the choice of name.
Dr. Fox (our principal) has explained numerous times to the many confused students how she chose the name.
After brainstorming unsuccessfully for acronyms and names, Dr Fox remembered that there exists a school in Britain who’s name she liked, called The Dragon School. She liked it “because it suggests the quest for self-discovery and also excellence” (also, incidentally, it apparently symbolizes lust).
She sent a letter to the headmaster asking if she could use the name and got a letter that said, “Because you are across the pond, it shouldn’t be a bother.” (Once I was telling someone I went to the Dragon Academy in Toronto, who said she had only heard of a Dragon school in Britain).
Dr Fox changed the name to the Dragon Academy and that is why the school was called The Dragon Academy.

I was wondering how the school got its name. Thanks for explaining. What do you think of private school? Did you choose or did your parents suggest you go?
