Belka Summer Camp

With over seven years experience, the Belka Enrichment Center has provided innovative Summer Camp Programs within Priority Neighborhoods at an affordable cost to low-income families. These Camps engage children and youths ages 5 – 13 academically, socially and recreational. They include: Academics and Academic Games Each day of the week is assigned an academic subject and campers do one hour of school work in this subject. Campers are placed in classes based on their age. All assignments are explained, marked, and corrected by the counselors. We commence each day by engaging in academic games which require campers to be interactive, do strategic thinking, and some basic mathematics calculations. Leadership Program Within a week of camp, selected campers who demonstrate some type of leadership skills are trained then assigned as mediators. As mediators they assist in the smooth operation of everyday activities, settle minor disputes between campers, and inform counselors/supervisors of other problems. Mediators receive incentives for their role, promotion/demotion based on performance, and a Belka Camp Leadership Certificate. Food Campers and workers are provided with a cooked nutritious meal for lunch along with two snacks each day. This enables them to perform at their optimum capability. Arts and Craft For a specified period each day campers are given the opportunity to express their artistic skills in the required manner assigned. This could be in the form of describing a situation, current events, or giving them various objects and art and craft pieces form which they create their unique artistic piece. Each year campers with outstanding abilities are selected to design posters/flyers and other materials for Belka. Outdoor/Indoor Activities Campers engage daily in medium to high level indoor/outdoor activities such as soccer, basketball, water balloon fight, and various other games. This is usually for two to three hours split in two periods. This is an important aspect of camp as we believe that physical activities promote healthy lifestyles, teamwork, and mutual respect for each other. Swimming Campers are taken twice each week to an indoor swimming pool where they swim and have fun playing pool games. They are supervised by our counselors/supervisors in and out of the pool. Additionally the pool has lifeguards who supervise as well. Trips Each year we take campers on several fun-filled trips such as Wild Water Kingdom, Wonderland, Picnics, Bowling, and lunch at Mandarin. Last year in addition to these trips, we took them to City Hall to meet the Mayor.
