Since 1942, Camp Portneuf offers an educational and wholesome experience to campers aged 4 to 16 years old. Located 50 minutes away from Quebec city, our camp develops in campers a sense of community, adventure and an appreciation of their natural surroundings. Highly qualified and trained staff ensure that our programming fosters self-development in an inclusive environment.

The Our Kids review of Camp Portneuf

our take

All kids need to be challenged, though they don’t all need to be challenged in the same way. Camp Portneuf in Lac Sept-Iles, Québec, is a traditional camp with a twist, in a sense, in that it focusses on supporting kids with behavioural problems. That can include a range of things, though a diagnosis isn’t so much an issue as it is simply providing a positive space for children who are struggling in other social environments. Director Marie-Pierre Lacasse is frankly inspiring, and brings a wonderful perspective to the camp. She says that her goal is to deliver “a life impacting type of experience, for kids that typically don’t’ fit in.” She adds, “Who hasn’t been labelled? Who hasn’t been set aside? At the end of the week we want them all to have had just a regular experience.” That includes all the traditional outdoor activities, though with a lot of latitude for kids simply to explore the world around them at their own pace. Says Lacasse, “If my kids what to follow ants for an hour. Great! That’s an awesome activity!” Watching ants is a great activity, in her mind, not because of what kids learn about ants, but the time it gives them to slow down a bit, and follow their curiosity, and support the values inherent in the camp experience. As such, they all experience of empowerment, as well as a sense of trust and responsibility, that can be transformative. “These are great kids!” says Lacasse, and what makes her such a great director is that she takes the time, and makes the effort, to allow them to see that in themselves.

Director's Message

principal

Marie-Pierre Lacasse, Executive Director

Camp is a life changing experience that allows campers to develop skills and to partake in a strong community life that will help shape their future in society. Located in a natural environment, our camp offers many activities and challenges for everyone.

Camp Portneuf is a special community where everyone is allowed to be their true self. Our camp thrives on offering campers from age 7 to 16 years old an wholesome experience where everyone’s interest is met in a safe and certified environment. Our camp community is formed by youth trained specifically for our summer camp reality and clientele each year.  Our 75 years of expertise in summer camp allow us to offer a unique experience in a French environment where children can come and live camp in their first or second language.

Camp Portneuf is adapted to offer a unique opportunity for children and teenagers living with ADHD and associate conditions by providing adapted cabin ratios (1 counselor per 3 campers) as well as providing a resource team that is specifically trained to support staff as well as campers through their camp experience. Our canoe-tripping program offers experiential education and outdoor intervention to provide campers learning opportunities and develop life-skills that they will carry for the rest of their life.

As a director team, we strongly believe that it is essential to not only support our campers and staff members, but it is our role and our mission to involve everyone in the development of our camp community. Our camper council is at the heart of the functioning of camp by providing a safe space for campers to express directly to us issues, success but mostly wishes and future projects they would like to lead through camp! We are grateful to have the opportunity to work with such an amazing group of humans each summer!

Yours in camping,

Marie-Pierre Lacasse
