Principal Chorus (PC)
Grades 6 to 10

Conductor: Teri Dunn

The Principal Chorus rehearses twice weekly on Mondays and Thursdays from 4:30 – 6:30pm and also meets on occasional Saturdays.  Regular Saturday rehearsals will take place in preparation for the annual fully staged annual spring opera production.

The session runs from the last week of August through to the end of May.  Late entry is possible at certain times of year - contact us for more info.

Principal Chorus members participate in vocal and dramatic training.  Techniques are provided by resident vocal instructors and drama coaches.   Additionally, the Principal Chorus regularly collaborates with leading professional musicians, musical organizations, coaches, directors, choreographers, and conductors.

Curriculum at the Principal Chorus level:

  • Build a solid foundation of vocal and dramatic technique
  • Sight-sing difficult tonal and atonal music
  • Understand complex mixed meters
  • Produce a fully-supported, resonant, well-projected sound within the bounds of a child’s natural voice
  • Sing in up to 8 parts
  • Sing in multiple languages with correct pronunciation
  • Maintain good posture and vocal support while moving on stage
  • Develop dramatic chorus roles with professional direction
  • Contribute effectively as a member of the chorus of a fully staged opera production

Members chosen as soloists in the annual spring opera production are expected to:

  • Develop dramatic characters in solo roles with professional direction
  • Learn the essential of solo singing, within the bounds of a child’s voice
  • Exhibit rapid and independent learning
  • Contribute effectively as a soloist

Every week students receive 4 hours of instruction.  This time will be shared between choral, drama, and theory instruction.  Allocation will vary depending on the concert or performance requirements.   During the annual spring opera production, students may have up to 10 hours of instruction a week including staging and rehearsals.  These allocations will be dependent on castings roles and responsibilities for each child.

Students of the Principal Chorus participate each season in a winter and spring concert, and in the annual fully staged opera production.  During the season they will perform in numerous other performance and recording opportunities, as well as appearing with leading performing arts groups such as the Canadian Opera Company, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Mirvish Productions, the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, the Tenors, and many more.

A five-day team-building music and drama overnight camp is held in the week before Labour Day, and is mandatory for all members.  The cost of this week is included in the $1900.
