The Our Kids review of Centauri Summer Arts Camp

our take

The programs at Centauri are firmly based in an interest in the arts, and campers typically enroll with the intention of developing their skills within a specific area of interest. They spend a portion of each day within that area, learning and developing alongside others of like interests and abilities. That said, it’s also a camp, and the intention is very much centered on personal and interpersonal development, having fun, and engaging creatively with others. In that, it’s a true camp experience, one that includes campfires, theme days, and dining hall chants. It’s a place for kids to have fun, to be themselves, and to learn while extending themselves within a safe, supportive, empathetic environment. In all, it’s a unique camp experience, and for the families that attend, that’s certainly the principal draw.

Director's Message

Julie Hartley, Director

When we established Centauri Summer Arts Camp 23 years ago, we had two clear goals in mind. The first seems obvious: we wanted to create a place where young people with arts interests could thrive by focusing on activities they love, and by nurturing their creativity. We wanted to bring together artistic youth with the creative professionals and teachers best able to guide and mentor them. But we also had a second goal in mind: to establish a residential camp that would be a community in every possible way. A space where each camper could grow and learn, supported by a caring, empathetic staff who are the very best role models any young person could wish for. Centauri is everything we dreamed of, eighteen years ago. Our campers have the time of their lives, spending their days exploring the arts and participating in festivals, evening programs, cultural banquets, arts events, concerts, traditional camp activities, leadership opportunities and more. In our view, carefully chosen and well trained staff are the key to everything. Our counsellors are all over the age of 18 and are selected for their maturity, dedication to community ideals, their ability to inspire and their eagerness to work with young people in an artistic environment. Most of our counsellors are known to us for years before they join us on staff. Our program directors are not only respected professionals, but they understand the needs of young people, and can build arts programs for them that are engaging, varied and creative. At Centauri, we bring together three opportunities in one space: our campers explore the arts, participate in residential camp, and find themselves valued and respectful members of a thriving community. Our camp parents tell us again and again that this combination can be life-changing: it builds confidence, team spirit and a sense of self worth. Our campers tell us Centauri is a place they can truly be themselves, making friends and memories that will stay with them forever.

Stories & Testimonials

Once again, our son returned home with renewed confidence.

Once again, our son returned home with renewed confidence. When we asked him what his favorite thing was he said......CAMP! Just being there with accepting, like minded kids is all he really wants. Of course, his ambition is to improve his arts skill as well, but we feel it's what he gets from Centauri socially that makes the biggest difference for him. If it were up to our son, he would never come home. He loves his family, but he feels free with his Centauri family. .. Keep doing what you do. Kids need to have opportunities to explore the arts and schools are no longer funded the way they used to be. We love Centauri!

Parent Testimonial

Yesterday we came for the Presentation Day for Session 3 to visit our daughter since she is staying on for Session 4. Wow! We were so impressed. She had come to Centauri last year for the first time and really enjoyed herself. I had almost forgotten just how much she is in her element at Centauri. I think Centauri is an amazing experience for a young person like her. She really seems to have found her “tribe” at Centauri. I think the “day to day” during the school year can really wear a kid down, especially ones as unique and creative as the kids who attend your camp. I know all year our daughter would say I just can’t wait to get back to Centauri. When I came to camp yesterday, the kids were busy doing their final preparations for Presentation Day. In the distance there was this very confident, relaxed, joyful and totally at ease young lady, and it took me a second to see that yes, she was indeed my daughter. I can’t say enough good things about your camp. It will always be my number one priority to make sure that my daughter returns each summer to Centauri as long as she wants to go. I can’t thank you enough for providing such a safe, caring and creative environment for young kids. There is only one thing that I wish you could do that you are currently not doing – open a private school for the arts in the GTA. That would be perfect! I look forward to returning for Presentation Day for Session 4 to see my happy daughter and see all the wonderful creations and performances by all the kids. I really can’t thank you enough. Sincerely, camp parent

Parent Testimonial

We wanted to thank you for giving our daughter the best start ever possible in summer camping. We were nervous when we sent you a girl who was too afraid to even sleep at a friend’s house, but who really wanted to be successful at overnight camp - particularly Centauri as it was everything (on paper) that she wanted in a summer program. We were thankful that you helped us to prepare her for her first session away from home with tips and suggestions, and even a visit to our home to share stories and photographs with her. We were amazed when we spoke to our daughter on her call day and she let us know that the first few nights had been rough, but that her counsellors had been terrific, she loved the other kids at camp, and that Julie had made a special effort to check on her and to come and tell her group a night time story. We were blown away when we picked up our daughter at the end of her session and she told us stories of how everyday was a ‘special day’ at Centauri. The performances we saw on pick up day were fantastic and the goodbyes were tearful. We were shocked when our daughter told us that she would not only like to go back to Centauri next year, but would go back again this year if she could. She was immediately bored with the day camp program that we had enrolled her in (for the third year in a row - she liked it before!) and the food services program our kitchen was just not living up to the standard set by Centauri dear, there will not be a salad bar with 10 items of your choice available at every meal.) Way to go guys! Looking forward to seeing you again next year, and for many years to come.

Our dining hall is the centre of themed meals, banquets and of course great food!
