Kettleby Valley Camp answered our questions

Who are you as an organization?

Kettleby Valley is a day and overnight summer camp offering traditional camp activities such as canoeing, climbing wall, archery and swimming. Kettleby Valley Camp has the look and feel of a traditional northern camp that’s just north of Toronto. We don’t believe you have to put three hours between you and your children to have a quality summer camp experience!

    • Special needs: Not available

What do you do differently or uniquely well?

    This information is not available.

Who are your staff and counsellors?

"Each year, we assemble a unique team to work at KVC. Here are a few qualities that we look for in all of our staff, no matter the position:
1 - they must know the importance of making everyone feel welcome at camp.
2 - they must be here at camp to contribute to their camper’s experience wherever they can. They all understand that their social needs are secondary to those of our campers.
3 - they must understand the link between the demands of the job and achieving the rewards. Working at camp has its challenges, but there are few jobs that come with the satisfaction we receive through helping campers grow during their time at KVC. If we want to feel fulfilled with our working experience, we must all be willing to put in the work."

What do families need to know about registration?

"Our registration opens at 7:00 AM on November 1st and most of our spaces are filled right away. Families can cancel until April 30th (cancellation fees may apply) so submitting your request to be on the waitlist is an important step as changes do occur."

The Our Kids review of Kettleby Valley Camp

    our take

It’s a truism, but worth repeating, that at camp there is more than meets the eye, and Kettleby is a great example of that. It’s a traditional camp, with all the traditional activities, from canoeing, to swimming, to hiking, to arts and crafts. There are some updates, too, including paintball. But, as director Peter Truman says, “all the activities really are a medium for us to help kids understand that trying new things isn’t a big deal.” And with that comes a lot of social, emotional, and physical growth and development, something that the Kettleby program actively brings to the fore. There has been a camp on this site since the late 1950s. The cities to the south have grown, and it’s not as far from the urban environment as it once was, though that brings a nice plus as well: it’s close to home, something that both parents and campers appreciate.

    Thanks Kettleby!!

My two daughters went to overnight camp for the first time last summer and had the time of their lives at Kettleby! We were all thrilled with this camp. The location, the price, the quality of lodging, food, staff and FUN was excellent! It was a life changing experience for them, literally. What made this exceptional for me as a parent: -staff was excellent, very helpful, extremely attentive to the kids and according to my girls "a ton of fun". -I have one picky eater and she came home and said that the food was "awesome'! Now that says something!! -the fact that the swim programs are included (Bronze Star, etc.) was amazing to me, those are expensive programs otherwise -the grounds are beautiful - when we went for the open house before camp started and it was our first time seeing an overnight camp, I felt like I was on a movie set. Quaint cabins throughout woodsy trails, very picturesque. -the girls enjoyed being able to choose their activities for the day - that was a definite plus! -the girls were amazed that the camp owner/director would walk around at meal times and sit down with kids and chat with them - I was very impressed with that as well! They felt like one big family! Overall this was a completely positive experience for our family and we are already signed up for next summer and the girls can hardly wait!! Thanks Kettleby! ... Best Day Camp Ever!

Best day camp ever! York Region has this treasure so close by, with bus transportation provided daily to & from home. Exceptional staff that value fun, respect, safety for all the campers. Recommend this location for the outdoor experience that has so many added features; wall climbing, archery, canoes, swimming pool, theme days, and a great lunch menu ... Show More

    Bravo Kettleby!

Our son has gone to Kettleby every summer since he was 7 ~ it’s been 7 summers so far. This camp is an absolute gem and we are so thrilled to have such a high quality camp so close to home. Each year our son comes home with new stories, new friends and having had great experiences which will provide memories for a lifetime. The day camp and overnight camp are run very well. Food is “awesome “ according to our son (they have the world’s best chicken burger according to him!). The staff are excellent and I believe that stems from the steady and humble ownership and filters down every level even to the trainees. Our son (who already has the LIT qualifications) has the opportunity for a paid position this summer but instead wants to go back to do the LIT program at Kettleby as he’s always looked up to the leaders there and wants to be a part of that culture. Bravo Kettleby! We can’t recommend you highly enough ... Show More

    I highly recommend it!

So glad Kettleby Camp is still thriving. I went there three summers in a row in the late 60s when it was known as Camp Richhilldaca. Our counselors were wonderful people, and I learned to love and respect nature rather than fear it. Kettleby camp was one of the very best experiences of my young life and one which I cherish now into my late 60s. I highly recommend it ... Show More

  • What's New

    Director's Message

    Peter Truman, Camp Director

Last summer (2023) saw the return of many popular traditions at KVC. First, we reestablished our Arts and Crafts program. In 2021, our counsellors began instructing Arts and Crafts to maintain cohorts and keep campers outside as much as possible. This limited the scope of the activity and although our counsellors did their best, not everyone has the same level of skills when it comes to crafts. Last year, under the leadership of our long time staff member Skip, Arts and Crafts had a new home where campers had access to more supplies and the projects that we were able to offer was expanded and more elaborate. Our day camp program also saw the return of large gatherings. Each day began and ended at the Notch, with all 240 campers. This allowed us to create a greater sense of community, deliver a consistent message to everyone, and recognize achievements such as getting a bullseye at archery in front of the entire camp. We also gathered together every Friday afternoon for our Awards Campfire. Groups were awarded activity buttons that they earned throughout the week. 5-Year Camper Paddles were presented, and the winners of our bus competition were announced.

Finally, we were able to host our first Open House since 2019. We recognize that there are families who have been sending their campers to Kettleby Valley for several years and have never had the opportunity to see the camp. Parents were able to see the cabins where campers sleep, take part in some of our camp activities and appreciate the wonderful property that helps make our camp special. I hope you’re as excited as we are about this summer, and I hope to see you at our 2024 Open House on June 15th.
