Our Camp Directors

Cory Shiner

Cory Shiner founded Kids of Canada in 1995 with a summer Hockey Camp program. Soon after, Kids of Canada moved into travelling day camps, taking children to amazing attractions all over the GTA. Things quickly evolved and K.O.C. branched out into canoe trips, white water rafting & rock climbing trips and even a Disney World trip for the millennium anniversary! Cory was actually introduced to the camp environment via his college placement. He is a graduate of the Centennial College Recreation & Leadership program and also attended York and Brock Universities for Phys Ed. Cory has coached local youth minor hockey at the house league, select and rep levels for over 20 years! Over the years, Cory’s core belief of “personal attention” is what drives the success of Kids of Canada even to this day! He and his wife Narah have 3 wonderful boys and live in Thornhill.

Gary Don

Gary Don comes from an extensive recreation background having worked at many camps and resorts. For the past 15 years, Gary has served as the Social and Programming Director at the Delawana Inn Spa & Conference Resort. He holds a business degree from Ryerson University with a major in Information Technology. Having also spent 10 years as a disc jockey in Toronto, he has a passion for entertaining and loves performing for people of all ages. Gary has worked in just about every role a camp has to offer and has a passion for the camp environment. He also believes that EVERY child should have an opportunity to experience summer camp. When he’s not “schmoozing” or “playing”, Gary enjoys spending time at home in Barrie with his wife Christie and their son Noah. He is an animal lover and also adores their two dogs Casey and Max. Gary and Christie actually met, got engaged and got married at camp!

Dear Cory,

I really wanted to write you this thank you letter in order to express how I truly feel, as not enough verbal “Thank You’s” could ever express my gratitude.
Cory, you are a wonderful, caring person who has really made a difference in my kids’ lives. You have allowed Charlie to overcome his fear and apprehension in attending overnight camp in one afternoon! That is truly awesome! And now thanks to you, Charlie will have this amazing overnight experience for the rest of his life. I know that when my kids are at camp and in your care they feel safe and confident which are the two most important characteristics I as a parent want my children to always feel.
Again, from Charlie, Lucas and me we say THANK YOU!! And we all look forward to another amazing summer at Kids of Canada and Kids of Canada North!
Sincerely and always grateful,

Dear Cory and Gary,
Just wanted to send you both a note thanking both of you, so much, for making —- first experience at overnight camp such a success! He came home last night and was telling us about all the activities he did, and even more impressive, he told us about all the NEW activities he tried! He went fishing for the first time ever, caught an 8 pound fish that he opened and cooked?! He went on a nature walk with a compass that he made by himself?! He built a raft out of wood?! He built a fire rubbing 2 twigs together?! He made a plaque with his name using the sun and a magnifying glass?! The —- I sent you was focused on sports and not always eager to try new things! If he didn’t tell us all of this himself, we never would have believed it!!! In order for him to have wanted to try new things, you must have created an environment that was “safe”, nurturing and comfortable which allowed him to go outside of his comfort zone every single day, and open his mind to new things, and I cannot thank you enough for that! The —- I sent you is not the —- that came home. Because of you, he took full advantage of all that overnight camp has to offer!! His first experience far exceeded my expectations!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!

Just wanted to say that Jason had an amazing time at camp these past 2 weeks. He had wonderful things to say every day he came home from camp. As a parent I was extremely impressed with the amazing communication and updates. By far the best I’ve seen from any camp – and between 2 kids and many different camps, that’s saying something! Thank you for making the first few weeks a camp such a great experience for Jason!

I wanted to say a big thank you to Cory Shiner and the group at Kids of Canada summer camp. I was hesitant to send my young son to camp last year but it turned out to be the best decision I made.

First the driver and councilor on the bus were amazing, friendly, polite and very helpful Morning and Afternoon I was greeted with a wave and a kind word even when they changed drivers I still received the same level of professionalism. Every day David came home excited to tell me about his day he loved his councilors, adored the activities and learned so many new songs and activities. When my child had a small rash from a reaction to the heat not only did the councilor on the bus tell me but the director of the camp (Cory Shiner) called to check on David that night. I was so impressed with the level of concern for my child you don’t see that every day. Since his last day at camp last year David has been asking when camp starts again. He is excitedly waiting for July and to be back making memories with his Kids of Canada Family.

Thanks to Cory and the gang for the wonderful job you do making a fun safe place for children to enjoy their summers!

I wanted to thank you for the wonderful camp experience that your camp offered to Jennifer. She had a great time and looked forward to each day. Your staff are excellent: they are both professional and caring!

———————————–

I would like to again say a BIG thank you for your kindness and generosity this summer. Max absolutely adored being at your camp and it was so nice for him to be so busy instead of just hanging out at the house all summer well I had to work. So again just a big thank you and I hope you enjoy a well deserved break.

I just thought I would let you know that Jack on the bus was great with Max. He had a really good attitude and was very helpful getting Max on the bus in the mornings. He even carried him inside for me in the pouring rain, which I thought was amazing. Max really liked him and looked forward to seeing him on the bus.

———————————–

Thank you for a great hockey camp season. The kids had a great time. I would like to let you know that Jack was amazing. He wore a name tag so that parents and kids knew his name. He was energetic, smiling and called Max by his name. On The last day of week 6 it was John’s birthday. Jack made a point to remind Max that it was John’s birthday before he got on the bus so he could wish him a happy birthday. I asked Jack if he was his coach and he said no. I was even more impressed that Jack took the time to get to know the kids on the bus! Amazing staff member!

Our Guests Talk…

Family Camp was awesome! We had such a great time. It’s the perfect concept, actually. The kids have a blast and the parents have a blast. Meals are prepared for you; there are loads of fun activities for the kids throughout each day (while being supervised by camp counsellors!) The cabins are an excellent place to bond as a family and the daily camp fire was the ideal way to unwind. It truly felt like a vacation – not what I was expecting from “camping”!
Thanks so much for the lovely hospitality, Shiner family!
We’ll be back.

To Cory & Narah and the counsellors at Kids of Canada Family Camp

A big thank you to all of you for making our first family camp experience such a success!

We know it was your first experience also and none of us knew what to expect but you were all so adaptable, willing to roll with each of our family dynamics and unique situations and that truly made this experience so wonderful, relaxing and comfortable for all of us.

The counsellors were friendly, polite and professional. Given the age group of our kids (2-4 years old) they did a great job keeping them engaged and involved. They were even able to expose them to new experiences.

For us as parents, watching our kids excitement as they tried so many new activities was certainly a highlight and having the option of sharing that experience with them or just watching their faces light up when they told us what they did was amazing.

You created an environment in which the children felt safe and were willing to take the risk and try new things. The kids had a great time, which in turn allowed us as parents to relax and enjoy some down time!

THANK YOU!! And we all look forward to more years at Family Camp at Kids of Canada.
