She came back with certificates of things she can do

Andrea: When the boat came to the dock to pick us up (at the end of her two-week stay), I was like, please, please, go on longer, please. Oh no!
Andrea's mother, Heather: Andrea did not really want to go. She was just eight this past summer. I think she was one of the youngest campers. But when she came home, she slept for a whole day, and then she talked non-stop for a week afterwards. She was not the adventurous type-until she went to Northway. We were pushing her because she had never even wanted to go for a sleepover at a friend's house. How was she going to manage, sleeping in a tent with strangers!
Andrea: I had three friends (in her tent). The counsellor (who slept with them) was Catherine. She was fun! We went on a canoe trip and stayed out two nights. We had a campfire on a little island and told ghost stories. They weren't scary, they were funny.
Heather: We're cottage people. My husband and his family have been cottaging on Kashe Lake since the 1920s. The camp is across the lake. Andrea's older sister, who is 12, had also gone to the camp for four years. My two stepdaughters had been to the same camp-it's almost like an extension of the family. They are still friends with people they met at camp. The older one even married a guide she met at camp.
Andrea: The camp is really old and fun, and every night the whole camp gets together and we sing songs and play games. My favourite was the camp birthday-it was 100 years old, and we gave each other presents. I got a present made out of gimp (plastic rope). It's really cool.
Heather: Andrea is so proud that she came back with certificates of things she can do. Her enthusiasm is just infectious. She's told so many kids at school how wonderful camp is. I've been getting calls from their parents asking about the camp. I told Brookes (Prewitt, Northway director) she's the camp's new marketing manager. I find she just grew a lot from the experience. She's willing to take chances.
