This is a first-ever chance in Vancouver for high-school students to try out the journalism life and learn skills that are valuable for all kinds of future jobs. The program will be taught by working reporters (who are also instructors in Langara's professional journalism program) from the CBC, the Vancouver Sun, the Globe and Mail, and Global TV. They'll introduce students to the basic skills of journalism: how to interview people, how to dig up information, how to write news stories and headlines that draw readers in, how to tell stories through compelling sound and visuals.
This will be a very practical, fun, fast-paced week that will end with journalism that students can show off: an online newspaper in the first week, audio broadcasts and podcasts for the second, and a television-news-style story in the third week.
Students can take any one week by itself or do any combination of two weeks or even attend all three weeks, if they want to try out all three of the major platforms for telling news stories. This is a great opportunity for students to try out a career or just get a great boost in writing, researching, interviewing, and audio and video skills.
