I was cooking dinner while my son, who was 8 at the time, bounced happily in his seat (per usual). He was supposed to be doing his homework and instead was staring happily up at the shadows on the ceiling and rocking his chair back and forth.
I ignored it because I was tired and hungry and just wanted to finish dinner (macaroni…again) as fast as I could while he was still sitting in one spot. Then bam! He was gone! The chair had keeled over so hard it was now across the floor and my son was lying halfway underneath the table.
I held my breath…3-2-1. Then slowly, the cries I anticipated began. It didn’t take long to distract him from his accident but then came the circular argument about why it happened, then the pulling time until bed time and the delay of going to sleep, “mom I am hungry” as I was trying to get him to begin his night.
Every now and then I think about that time, and all the others we had been through and wonder if that would still be my evening routine if I hadn’t found ThriveKids.
ThriveKids gave my son and me the tools we need to manage each day better. The instructors at ThriveKids taught me techniques to help my kid become better focused and more healthy. The approach is so great because they have solutions to help the “whole” SpiritedKid™!
3 Ways ThriveKids Helped Me Succeed as a Parent:
1. Exercise - One of the most important aspects of the ThriveKids programs is the exercise. The program helped me give my son vigorous exercise multiple times per week so that he could sleep better and focus better too. Through the ThriveKids 20/20/20 program, I was able to help my son participate in vigorous exercise 4 times per week. I definitely noticed that alone helped him focus his attention on his reading and math homework in the evenings. Additionally, when there were times he couldn’t concentrate on his work, we learned how to use relation techniques to calm him and help him focus.
2. Nutrition - I already knew that healthy eating habits led to a lower risk of obesity. However, I had no idea the effect that good nutrition has on the mind. The ThriveKids Food for Fuel program and parent workshop taught me how to prepare quick and healthy meals that would help my kid work harder and concentrate better. It also helped my son make better choices, even when he is not with me.
3. Mindfulness - ThriveKids helped my son deal with his behavior, how to control it and how to be mindful of other kids and adults. He now introduces himself when we have guests and holds eye contact with people. He is also learning how to talk about his emotions rather than react with anger. He is much happier and content!
Thank you ThriveKids™, you program is amazing!!
