Sarah Bell, Family Camp Dreictor

Family Camp: Multi-generational groups of people coming together to play, learn and explore outdoors! That's what YMCA Wanakita's Family Camping is all about! We define a family as "two generations." That's it! We see families at camp that consist of single-parent makeups, grandparents & grandkids, same-gender parents, aunts & uncles, cousins, neighbours and friends.

In the summer the programs we offer are your typical summer camp activities, including canoeing, swimming, hiking, high ropes, arts & crafts, dance, theatre, music, yoga, out tripping etc., but the way in which we design and deliver the programs is unique! At Family Camp you will have the opportunity to meet new people in your own age group (be it 3 years old to adults!), or in our family-friendly programs designed for all ages. Programs are intended to  strengthen family relationships, cooperation, leadership, outdoor and arts skills, challenge you, as well as foster an appreciation and connection to the natural world! There's so much to do here, with a schedule full of fun instructor-led activities day and night, a well as the freedom to just lounge on the beach or go for a hike in the woods as a family.

Families come back year after year for so many reasons: outdoor fun, great food, amazing people, beautiful location; but most of all, it's a place to create "memories that last a lifetime", as our traditional Charter states!

We also offer year-round opportunities to bond as a family:

New Year's Family Camp
Family Day Weekend
March Break Family Camp
Mother-Daughter Weekend
Father-Son Weekend

I hope to see you at one of our Family Camp programs soon!
From our family to yours,

Sarah Bell at YMCA Wanakita Family Camp

Another Great Year at Wanakita!

A message from a returning camper after arriving home from Family Camp:

"Thanks again for:
- Your work in setting up, staffing, planning, and leading a program that my kids plan to come back to before they leave each year.
- A wet week filled with sunny people.
- Super-awesome staff of all ages & backgrounds who manage to make each of us feel special in our own ways.
- A menu that I can't stop talking about whenever I describe my camp experience
- A place to watch my kids & other campers' kids grow, challenge themselves, and build friendships.
- The amazing Student Counsellors who worked so hard to put on another great Carnival in spite of the thermostat."

Love the Staff!

"The staff are outstanding!  They were such lovely role models for our boys and girls.  The whole staff should be proud of their work and efforts!  I love bringing the kids to Family Camp because of the kind, hard-working, fun and enthusiastic crew."

Great time at March Break Family Camp

I would like to thank you for the wonderful March Break week we had. It was very stress free, the meals were excellent and the staff was wonderful. I could not believe all the activities you had planned and the organization that goes into an event like this.  The other families were great and the kids a blast.  You are lucky to have such great staff, their attentiveness to the needs of the campers was excellent. Our kids had a blast and they are asking if we can go back next year, maybe with the grandkids!

A BIG THANKS to you and your staff for a week of great memories!

Community and Environment

When I think about what Family Camp has meant to me, I consider the larger context of the space and the surroundings.  When I go to family camp with my children, it allows me to connect with both of my sisters and their children in a way that is removed from the interruptions of a common life.  By choice, I can focus on the simple enjoyment of the moments without great consideration of time (oh, except for the setter's bell!).  My children and my niece and nephews get to simply engage in the natural world around them.  It gives me great joy to watch this happen, and to partake in it myself.

But for more than my own family, Family Camp extends the presence of community.  There is a sense at Family Camp that all of the kids are "our kids".  They sit with other families at dinner, approach a new adult at the campfire, learn a new song with Matt & Diane, hold the belay rope for a new friend and celebrate their ascent.  There is no greater gift we can give the planet than a sense of responsibility and kindness to our human and natural community.  At Family Camp, that is what we are there to do and we revel in the opportunity.  We are present.  We are giving.  We are enriched.

A Great Family Reunion!

"We use Wanakita Family Camp as a great family reunion and a chance to reconnect with old friends. We've used it to replace our old cottage time. No dramatic stories [to tell], but lots of family fun-- and the kids keep making sure we come back!"
