Écoles Montessori

Une femme à l’avant-garde, Dr Maria Montessori, a consacré sa vie à l’avancement de l’éducation des enfants de tous les âges. Elle croyait que la méthode d’enseignement classique, où l’enseignant donne un exposé et l’élève écoute, n’était pas favorable à l’apprentissage, car de nombreux élèves échouaient. C’est ainsi que les écoles Montessori ont vu le jour.

Depuis le début des années 1900, les écoles Montessori offrent un milieu d’apprentissage unique adapté aux élèves de tous les niveaux intellectuels de la petite enfance à l’âge de 18 ans. Les enseignants ne sont pas considérés comme le point central de l’apprentissage; l’élève est plutôt maître de son apprentissage, et l’enseignant doit simplement le (la) guider afin de faire ressortir son véritable potentiel avec des expériences stimulantes devant être complétées sans interruption au sein d’un environnement réconfortant.

Ainsi, l’essence même des écoles Montessori est une pédagogie fondée sur une approche véritablement pratique à l’éducation, qui développe tous les aspects de la psyché intellectuelle, spirituelle et émotionnelle de l’élève afin qu’il ou elle devienne une personne bien équilibrée. De nombreuses années de formation rigoureuse sont nécessaires avant que les adultes puissent assumer des postes d’enseignants au sein des écoles Montessori, et ils doivent être extrêmement chevronnés dans toutes les matières qu’ils enseignent.

Tout naturellement, les écoles Montessori ont connu une popularité partout dans le monde. Cependant, il importe de noter que chaque école peut différer dans son interprétation de la méthode d’enseignement Montessori.

Les parents devraient évaluer l’école qu’ils prennent en considération pour s’assurer qu’elle répond à leurs besoins. Montessori n’est pas une marque de commerce et aucune organisation ne régit l’utilisation de la phrase « école Montessori ».

Une école Montessori appropriée aura :

  • des enseignants formés par un institut comme l’Association Montessori Internationale (AMI). L’agrément de la formation Montessori est spécifique à chaque groupe d’âge.
  • des domaines d’enseignement désignés pour chacune des sphères suivantes : activités de la vie pratique, sensorielle, langage, mathématiques.
  • des classes avec un écart d’âge de trois ans, comprenant la Casa Montessori pour les enfants de 2 à 6 ans, et le primaire pour les enfants de 6 à 9 ans.
  • trois heures d’activité Montessori sans interruption chaque matin, ainsi que deux heures l’après-midi, pour les enfants d’âge primaire.

De nombreuses personnes préfèrent l’école Montessori au niveau préscolaire (ou éducation de la petite enfance). Il s’agit d’une façon de « faire l’essai » de l’éducation Montessori et de l’éducation privée.

Écoles Montessori au Canada
Le Canada est un des quelques pays au monde où les écoles Montessori sont intégrées au système public. La première école Montessori du Canada a été fondée à Toronto dans les années 1960 et est devenue le fondement du foisonnement de la méthode Montessori en Amérique du Nord. On pourrait dire qu’il en est encore ainsi aujourd’hui.

Évaluation de la méthode Montessori
Les écoles Montessori ne sont pas exemptes de critique, mais on a démontré que la méthode donne de bons résultats. Par exemple, dans une étude menée en 2006, publiée dans la revue « Science », les auteurs ont conclu que les élèves Montessori affichaient un meilleur rendement dans les domaines d’apprentissage classiques, comme les mathématiques et le langage, ainsi que les aptitudes sociales. L’étude a suivi deux groupes témoins pendant plusieurs années.

D’autres études indiquent que les enfants Montessori ont de bons résultats aux examens normalisés et se classent bien au-dessus de la moyenne en ce qui concerne les « compétences générales », comme suivre les directives, être ponctuel, écouter et être capable de s’adapter aux nouvelles situations.
