Certaines des écoles privées et indépendantes les plus réputées et anciennes du Canada sont situées à Montréal. Il existe aussi des écoles parallèles comme Montessori et Waldorf. Qu'il s'agisse de Westmount, d'Outremont, de Mont-Royal ou de la banlieue, il y a des écoles privées francophones et anglophones qui répondent aux besoins éducationnels des familles. Certaines écoles indépendantes offrent également une éducation de niveau collégial (CÉGEP).

Le gouvernement du Québec subventionne 60 % des droits de scolarité de bon nombre d'écoles privées à Montréal et ailleurs au Québec. Les familles assument l'autre 40 %, ce qui réduit les coûts de façon considérable. De nombreuses écoles privées à Montréal ne sont pas subventionnées et elles n'ont pas à se conformer aux lois linguistiques du Québec en matière d'éducation, ce qui permet à tout élève de fréquenter une école anglophone sans devoir présenter une lettre d'exemption de la province.

De nombreux parents consultent les classements, comme celui de l'Institut Fraser, qui classent les écoles par province. On ne doit pas prendre une décision fondée uniquement sur des classements généralisés ou l'opinion des autres, car on pourrait passer outre aux besoins précis de l'enfant.

Assurez-vous de visiter les écoles afin de comprendre le processus d'admission et de déterminer si l'école convient à l'enfant.
