Middle Schools in Canada

Middle Schools in Canada

Find a list of schools

Written by Hailey Eisen

Middle school in Canada typically functions as a transition between primary school (JK to Grade 5 or 6) and secondary school (Grade 8 or 9 to 12). Middle school or junior high school, as it is sometimes referred, can include any combination of grades 6 through 9 (ages 11 through 15).

Some middle schools exist as stand-alone schools, housing only the aforementioned grades, while others exist as part of a larger school—with an elementary or high school component. There are both public and private middle schools in Canada.

Private schools like Island Pacific School in Bowen Island, British Columbia focus exclusively on the middle years, serving students from grades 6 through 9. They believe that at this crucial age, students can either lose interest in school altogether or be set up for a lifetime of success. “Middle school can be a waste of time if students aren’t challenged enough,” said Ted Spear, Head of School. “As such, our goals are to sustain and enhance intellectual curiosity and to help students develop personality or character.”

One of the benefits of this small, independent middle school is that teachers are chosen specifically because of their ability to work with students of this particular age. “When it comes to teaching kids this age you want to ensure you’re giving them the proper level of respect and not insulting their intelligence,” Spear said. “Another way to think about it is you want to assume they have the ability to ask interesting questions and you want to respect that and motivate them to ask those questions.” Spear finds that while students may not look like they’re listening during these pre-teen and early teenage years, they are actually taking everything in. “This is a really good time to embed moral propositions,” he said. “if you have the right teachers and the right techniques in place to do so.

The Island Pacific School, like other private schools across the country, incorporates the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme into its curriculum. The IB programme comes with its own inquiry-based learning Middle Years programme (MYP) dedicated specifically to this age group. According to the IB website: “The MYP emphasizes intellectual challenge, encouraging students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and to the real world. It fosters the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding and global engagement, qualities that are essential for life in the 21st century.”

The Middle School Debate:

Over the past few years, research has begun to surface examining the pros and cons of middle schools versus K-to-8 schools (where both elementary and middle school students remain integrated under one roof). The results show that fewer transitions (i.e. students stay in one place until they go to high school) are beneficial, especially for those students who struggle academically. As such, more middle schools across North America are being closed and K-to-8 schools are taking their place.

Louise Brown of the Toronto Star reported, “’we’re finding huge negative effects in math and reading for students at the bottom half of the achievement ladder who go to middle schools,’ warned University of Toronto economics professor Elizabeth Dhuey. Her landmark study of 190,000 students in British Columbia, where tracking students is easier than in Ontario, found struggling Grade 7 students at a middle school scored worse on standardized math tests than their counterparts in K-to-8 schools — by 5 to 9 percent. They also performed worse in English, and continued to lag behind in Grade 10.” (Louise Brown, Toronto Star, June 10, 2012. Online.)

Also in 2012 the C.D. Howe Institute released a study entitled “Are Middle Schools Good for Student Academic Achievement? Evidence from Ontario” which found similar results. The study’s author, David R. Johnson, found that “middle school attendance increases the chance that students will fail provincially administered achievement tests, compared to similar students who stay in the same school through Grade 8.” (The Middle School Report Card: Troubling Evidence from Ontario, C.D. Howe Institute)

Despite these studies, some still argue the benefits of middle school stating that having a school that focuses specifically on this pre-teen age group can benefit students and serve as a more gentle transition into high school.

Staying In Place from K to 8:

In Stratford Ontario, a small private school was founded in 2010 to accommodate students in grades 7 and 8 when the school board made the decision to amalgamate students in those grades into the local high school. “We started the Stratford Middle Years School to accommodate those families who didn’t want their Grade 7 and 8 students transitioning to the high school environment at such a young age,” said the school’s co-principal Trixie Middleton-Mohr. Within a few years the school had grown to accommodate students from kindergarten to Grade 8. “Parents are often reluctant to make changes in their children’s lives and many approached us looking to start their kids with us at a younger age.” Today the Grade 7 and 8 students have the chance to be leaders within this small school, giving them the opportunity to build up the confidence they need to transition successfully into high school in Grade 9.

Benefits of Choosing A Private School for the Middle School Years:

While many students perform well and often thrive in public schools, there are benefits associated with choosing a private education. “Many parents like the private school option because it allows them to “shop” for a school that meets their child’s needs and gives them more control over the type of education their child is getting,” said Barbara Bierman, Executive Director of the Ontario Federation of Independent Schools. “Private schools can tailor their teaching to meet specific needs, learning styles, and interests, while public schools often take a one-size-fits-all approach.”

When focusing on the pre-teen and teenage years, the intentional element of private and independent education is appealing to many parents. These schools have the opportunity to really examine and question what education is supposed to be about, and put practices in place to ensure students are engaged. “This is the age where students are beginning to ask ‘Who am I?’” said Spear. “We set up an environment where they can explore that question, where they are respected and challenged, and where expectations about personal responsibility are put into place.”

The benefits of private school for the middle school years include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Increased access to resources, which allow students to explore their interests and talents more extensively
  • Tailored educational philosophies which allow students’ needs to be met in a more customizable way
  • Lower student-teacher ratios providing increased one-one-one attention which can help students succeed
  • Smaller class sizes, giving students a chance to work in small groups with more personalized attention
  • Niche schools that focus on specific interests or areas of focus like arts, sports, sciences, language, etc.
  • A business-like approach to parent communications, meaning parents’ concerns and opinions are valued and responded to in a timely and professional manner (parents are treated as customers)
  • Support systems for students with special needs and the expertise needed to help these students excel

Types of Private Schools That Serve Middle School Age Children:

There are many different types of private middle schools available to meet the needs of parents and students. Often, schools combine two or more of these categories. For example, a school may have day and boarding options, may be faith-based and boarding, or may be all-boys with a language specialization.

  • Traditional, Academic – schools with a primary focus on academics, open to all students and embodying a variety of different teaching philosophies and cultures depending on the specific institution
  • Co-educational – schools open to both male and females students with classes that combine both genders
  • All-girls / All-boys – schools where all students in attendance are of the same gender either male or female
  • Boarding – schools that offer room and board to students, providing a unique setting in which education is fused with a well-rounded lifestyle
  • Sports – schools that offer specialized sports programs, allowing dedicated athletes to improve upon skills while receiving an education that will prepare them for life beyond or after athletics
  • Special Needs – schools specialized for students diagnosed with any type of learning, developmentalphysical, or behavioural or emotional disorder
  • Faith-based – schools that combine solid academic programs with spiritual guidance and a focus on one particular religion/faith (i.e. Jewish, Christian, Catholic, Muslim)
  • Overseas Boarding– boarding schools in various countries around the globe that accept Canadian students; or Canadian schools with overseas opportunities and exchange programs
  • International Baccalaureate® (IB)- programs that help develop the intellectual, personal, emotional, and social skills to live, learn, and work in a rapidly globalizing world
  • Advanced Placement (AP) Schools – schools that offer the AP program help prepare children for life in college or university
  • Round Square – schools that encourage students to make a strong commitment, beyond academic excellence, to personal development and responsibility

Choosing a Private School:

With so many schools providing different environments, teaching styles, and philosophies, choosing one that’s right for your child can seem overwhelming. Part of this choice is whether or not you want your child to attend a school that goes from kindergarten to Grade 8, or whether you’d rather have them join a different school for the middle school years. This decision depends, in part, upon the schools available in your area. For example, in Ontario, there are no stand-alone private schools that just cover the middle school years; while in BC there are a number that do just that. A similar approach can be taken whether you’re looking to enroll your child in private school beginning around Grade 5 or 6, or if you’re looking for a school that will grow with them from the early years.

If you’re looking for a middle school or a transition to private school for the middle years consider taking a step-by-step approach and following a simple checklist to help make the process less stressful.

Begin by focusing on your child: his/her needs, strengths, weaknesses, personality, and learning style. Many parents start by seeking the advice of an educational consultant or advisor. “The first thing I do is look at the student’s academic profile, interests, and needs,” said Elaine Danson, a Toronto-based educational consultant. “Then, using a list like the Our Kids Private School Guide, I select a few schools that would come as close as possible to meeting those needs while helping that student thrive.”

The next step is to narrow your search down to a selection of schools that would be a good fit for your child. Use the Our Kids guide, visit school fairs, and explore school websites. Be sure to include your child in the process, especially when it comes to choosing a high school.

Once you have your short-list, start visiting schools. Set up tours, go to open houses, speak with administrators, call parents whose kids currently attend the school, and ask lots of questions. Remember, admissions are competitive, so try not to get your hopes set on just one particular school. Narrow it down to a list of two to four schools and then apply.

Applying to Private School:

The typical private school application timeline goes something like this:

October to November: Open houses at most private high schools

November to February: The majority of interviews take place

End of February: Acceptance for the following school year is given

“Remember there are all kinds of exceptions to this rule, so parents are advised to become familiar with each school’s website to find out specific dates and admissions requirements,” said Elaine Danson. “If you’re looking for your child to start a new school in Grade 9, you’ll want to start doing your research in the spring or summer of Grade 7. If you’re looking to begin in Grade 6, start your research the summer after Grade 4.

Application fees exist for all private schools and are usually around $150 per school. Most schools, depending on their size, have an online application process, but parents are often required to submit report cards, transcripts, etc. via mail. Some fees can be paid online while others require a cheque be sent by mail.

Once you’ve applied, there is still time to determine if the school is a good fit for your child.  “Most schools handle the interview portion of the application process like a conversation or chat,” said Danson. “This is a chance for the school to learn more about the student and for the student to ask any questions he or she may have about the school.”

Costs of private schools vary depending on the school, it’s budget, size, scope, and the province it’s located in. Scholarships are available from some schools that have endowments in place. These can be arts-based, sports-based, etc., but are not typically based on financial need. Bursaries or grants, on the other hand, are intended to provide financial support to families and are usually given through a third-party institution. All of these are non-repayable options to help with the cost of a private education. For more information please visit our page on private school grants.
