With generous support from Jim Waters, parent of two Pickering College graduates and former Chairman of CHUM Limited, Pickering College launched 102.7 CHOP FM on Friday, September 28, 2007. This
CRTC licensed, student-run FM radio station is the only local radio station serving the community of Aurora and Newmarket, and comes as a much-anticipated addition to the growing Senior School Communications Technology program.
Grade 11 students, Neil Proudfoot and Brett Kilroy, host the live morning show weekdays on 102.7 CHOP FM at Pickering College.
“We’re very excited about what the radio station offers our students,” says Peter Sturrup, Headmaster. “It’s an innovative way to introduce them to all aspects of broadcasting, including programming, content development, and the day-to-day running of a radio station.” In addition to working with senior school faculty, students will learn first-hand from radio-industry professionals who have committed to leading workshops and mentoring students.
Beyond the Communications Technology program, faculty and students from a wide range of programs see the radio station as a vehicle to strengthen the school community and share student work. Creative writing, film, music and arts students are lined up to contribute material to the daily program schedule.
The radio station also presents interesting opportunities for international students to develop programs in their mother tongue. “With our web streaming coming on-line soon, parents and alumni will be able to tune-in around the world,” says Curtis Metcalf, senior school faculty. “What a wonderful way for parents of our boarding students to connect to their child’s experience in Canada!”
Headmaster Sturrup points to CHOP FM as an excellent example of innovation in education—something Pickering College holds dear. “It really is a fantastic addition to our school,” says Mr. Sturrup. “The radio station provides a unique way to connect as a school and to reach out to our wider community—and this is just the beginning!”
