Canadian Hero Write-in Competition
Date: May 17, 2007

In 2007, an estimated 22,300 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer--and many of those people could be someone's hero.

Willow Breast Cancer Support Canada is looking for a Canadian Hero. To find them, they are holding a contest for kids between the ages of eight and twelve, encouraging them to write in with a story about a woman in their family who has been affected by breast cancer and why that person is their hero.

To enter the contest, children are invited to submit a short essay, maximum 300 words, telling Willow why they think of their mom or other female family member is their hero. The contest finalist will be awarded $5,000 toward their post-secondary education. Four regional prizes, worth $2,500 each, will also be awarded.

"Willow understands families face many challenges as they try to support each other throughout the breast cancer journey," says S. Elaine Brown, Executive Director, Willow Breast Cancer Support Canada. "No matter how emotionally troubling the time can be, we always encourage families to communicate with each other to the best of their abilities. This platform gives children the unique opportunity to share their feelings and relate uplifting messages about their loved ones dealing with the disease. We believe this will be an empowering experience for all who participate and we look forward to reading entries from across Canada."

This contest is sponsored by Abraxis Oncology. Entries for the contest will be accepted both online and via Canada Post until August 10, 2007. Winners will be announced September 12, 2007.
