School Life

Learning challenges met: I no longer feel stupid
By: Samara, Grade 8, Greenwood College School

I know that I can be successful at anything, and feel equal to all of my classmates.

I have a visual processing disorder that makes reading a challenge and my writing interesting. Before coming to Greenwood College School, my mother would re-read all of my work to me at night so that I could keep up. I was a good student, but it was getting harder because I couldn't get the support at school during the day and had to work so hard to keep up at night. I never felt confident in sharing my work with my peers and always kept hearing about what I couldn't do.

When I came to Greenwood, I was introduced to the Success Centre, which has changed me life. My computer is loaded with software that allows me not only to keep up with my work but also to work independently. My textbooks are scanned into my computer and then it reads to me. Now I can stay on top of my work and be part of all class discussions--and even work ahead. In the Success Centre, I receive 80 minutes of individual help every other day on specific work I have difficulty with. I am able to write tests in a quiet environment and go in before or after school to receive extra help or clarification on work. I even have a scribe for written tests and in-class assignments. I no longer feel stupid. I know that I can be successful at anything, and feel equal to all of my classmates. This is all because of this very special place and the people that work at my school.
