Searching for a Calgary private school

When searching for a private school in Calgary, you should check to see if the school is registered with and respected by the Alberta Board of Education. Be sure to use all the online research tools you can find and to verify a school's accreditation. You may also use Our Kids' resources, such as virtual tours of some of Calgary's private schools and guides on how to choose the right school for your kid.

During your research process, you should consult myriad unique sources to learn about the reputation of the school and find out if they can give you references. Talk to a school's teachers, students, and their parents. Be sure you fully comprehend the system of Alberta's private schools.

Some things to consider when checking out private schools:

  • Visit more than one private school. Indeed, many of Calgary's schools have varying educational philosophies, so one school may be quite different than the last one that you visited. Compare and contrast the schools that you toured.
  • Request references from other parents.
  • Meeting face-to-face with some teachers and administrators could be extremely useful and telling. Ask general questions that will allow them to discuss their level of commitment and their philosophies. Do they offer extra-help? If so, how often are extra-help sessions? How involved are they in extracurricular activities? What do they think is the most challenging and/or most rewarding part of being a teacher?

Affording private schools

The province of Alberta might help you reduce the expense of your child's private school education by providing schools that meet a specific criterion with provincial grants. Click here to read more about Alberta Education's private schools grant system.

Furthermore, many of Calgary's private schools themselves will assist you in funding your child's education through scholarships and bursaries. The former refers to merit-based payments that your child may earn through great marks, an extremely successful entrance examination, outstanding community involvement, or remarkable achievements in a particular area, such as arts or athletics. In contrast, bursaries are a form of financial aid that a school pays based on your needs. Whether you are applying for scholarships or for bursaries, you ought to do so early, as schools typically have strict application deadlines.
