Montessori Schools in Newmarket and Markham and throughout the York Region follow the original Montessori teaching method and philosophy. Institutions with accreditation from the Canadian Council of Montessori Administrators (CCMA) adhere to regulations which guarantee that they are an authentic Montessori school. Some schools are not accredited but still adopt many aspects of Dr. Maria Montessori's original educational philosophy.

Some General Principles of Montessori Education

The Montessori approach significantly differs from mainstream education in some key areas. Here are some of these key aspects of the Montessori philosophy espoused by York Region Montessori schools:

  • Class sizes in Montessori institutions are often larger than at public schools or other private schools. Montessori education believes that, instead of small class sizes, students learn best when they are integrated with different age groups. Older students cultivate leadership skills in this environment, while younger students learn from their older peers. The Montessori method focuses on the ways in which large classes foster increased social interaction amongst children of varying ages and how children learn from each other.
  • Students explore subjects on their own (i.e. self-directed learning). The central role of instructors is to facilitate creative and intellectual curiosity rather than to just tell students what they ought to know. Your son or daughter will have plenty of opportunities to explore his or her interests.
  • Your child's performance will not be based on just a number or a letter grade. Rather, Montessori schools believe in evaluating your son or daughter on a holistic basis.

While Montessori schools in Markham, Aurora and Newmarket are academically rigorous, they emphasize a lot more than academics. Becoming a well-rounded person is a major part of education. The classroom instills confidence and independence in your child.

Paying for a Private School

Tuition for Markham's Montessori schools begins around $4,000 per year. However, there are ways to alleviate tuition costs. The school itself or external organizations (i.e. corporations and charitable organizations) offer scholarships (merit-based), financial aid, and sibling discounts. The government of Ontario also provides tax breaks if the Montessori school you send your child to has both religious and academic components.
