Private Catholic Schools

Find a list of schools

Private Roman Catholic schools do not receive public funding and benefit from the freedom to teach with fewer constraints and offer other advantages such as smaller class sizes. Instructors can use alternative and creative teaching styles. Among the private Catholic schools that Our Kids lists, you can find boarding, all-girls, all-boys, and other types of Catholic schools. Although school curriculum varies, all private Catholic schools share a common affiliation with the Roman Catholic Church and encourage students to grow in the Catholic faith.

Private Catholic Schools

Schools combine the study of the Catholic religion with secular subjects (such as math, science, English, French, social studies, etc.) They are also known to provide a wide variety of extra-curricular activities and programs.

If you would like to meet face to face with administrators or representatives from schools, attend a private school expo.

Distinct Advantages of Private Catholic Schools

Private Catholic schools come with many unique benefits. These include:

  • Enriched Academics: Because private Catholic institutions have two types of courses (religious and academic), they have a more intensive curriculum than do most other types of schools. This rigorous, disciplined environment helps prepare your son or daughter for the next level of education.
  • Safety and Security: Many parents claim they feel more safe and secure with their children at private Catholic schools because of their community atmospheres and on-site security services.
  • Character Building: Learning about scripture and receiving training, advice, and counseling in the Roman Catholic tradition goes beyond what a regular school entails. A private Catholic education is focused on developing mature citizens.
  • Extra-help: Private schools have a strong capacity to offer out-of-class assistance. Your son or daughter need not fall behind because his or her teachers will be available to talk before or after hours.
  • Identity: A Catholic private school will assist your child in finding his or her Catholic identity. Students, especially in high school, are highly inquisitive about important questions in their lives. What is my purpose in life? Why should I be religious or spiritual? A Catholic education will work with your child to navigate these difficult, yet key issues.

Paying for a Catholic Private Schools

There are plenty of resources to help you pay for a Catholic private school for your child. Financial aid is quite common, with Catholic schools offering a high number of scholarships and grants. If your son or daughter is accomplished or involved in a particular area (i.e. academics, art, community service, physical education), then he or she may be eligible for a scholarship or financial aid. Be sure to apply early for both scholarships and bursaries.

In many provinces, paying for a religious school counts as a charitable donation for which you will receive a tax break. Contact a provincial government official for more information or read more about tax deductions for private school education.
