Kids zoo camps

Zoo camps give kids the keys to the animal cages!

There are several zoo camps across Ontario where kids can spend summer time to get hands on experience with animals and learn firsthand what life is like inside the zoo. Of course, they get to meet many of the animals face-to-face. For kids who love wildlife and animals zoo camp offers the experience of a lifetime.

A zoo camp is usually organized as a residential summer camp program that gives campers a chance to work with animals in a zoological park. Younger children may have activities like games, songs, activities, animal visits, stories, crafts and walk-abouts. Older children may undergo advanced training in zoo maintenance and even animal behavior. Teens can explore animal behavior, wildlife conservation and career options at these zoo camps.

Some activities at this kind of camps include:

  • Daily care of the animals: Cleaning, feeding and watering at the zoo.
  • Animal sharing: Free time with the animals.
  • Wildlife safari: Campers learn about wildlife and the environment. Night safaris teach about nocturnal animals.
  • Hiking: Learning to identify native plants and animals.
  • Orienteering: Using a compass to navigate the woods.
  • Animal tracking: Identifying the footprints of deer, raccoons, chipmunks, bears, and more.

Campers can also choose from a variety of activities taught by SCBI scientists and keepers. Outdoor living skills, arts and crafts, tree climbing, sports and campfires may also be included. Talent shows, presentations, biking and outdoor sports are also organized by zoo camps. In fact, these camps may cover every aspect of the zoo and aquarium that affects the wellbeing of the animals like nutrition, enclosures, security, exercise and enrichment, veterinary care, contact with visitors and so on. Campers at zoo camps are taught about endangered species, extinct animals, wildlife art, tribal art and many related subjects too.
