UNIQUE FEATURES:
The unique feature of academic schools is the belief that all students are capable of pursuing university studies upon graduation. This belief is embedded in the school's culture. Focused on academic preparation for post-secondary studies, these schools are often smaller in size (commonly having between 400 to 700 students in a kindergarten-to-graduation program).
BENEFITS:
This expectation that all students have the capability of pursuing university studies becomes a catalyst for students to develop the vital skills of how to learn effectively, how to communicate effectively, how to collaborate in research, and so forth. In addition, there is often a shared belief among students in the school that a full commitment to one's studies is an investment for the short- and long-term futures and leads to a rewarding life of learning. This atmosphere is truly supportive of students who wish to achieve their full potential.
HOW DO I KNOW IT'S A GOOD FIT?
Understand the characteristics of the learning environment in which your child thrives. Establish core short-term academic goals and some life goals for, and with, your child. Visit a few schools and look for and discuss school culture, the academic program, the expectations of students, the style of teaching, and the typical relationship between children and teachers. Arrange for your child to join a class at the school for a day. Trust in your child's observations about the visit.
