The Our Kids review of Académie Vaudrin Academy

our takeVaudrin has devoted itself to helping children reach their full potential, and within that casts a very wide net. A trilingual school, certificates of eligibility are not required for enrollment. The school bases instruction in creativity and interpersonal collaboration, and supports learners through a broad range of means, including those for struggling learners, including the rightly celebrated Arrowsmith approach. This is a school that doesn’t shy from reaching out, trying new things, and adapting to meet individual’s needs, and though still relatively young, Vaudrin has certainly charted its success in that regard. When Vaudrin says that they will help all learners reach their potential, they certainly take it to heart.

Curriculum Liberal Arts, Montessori

Primary Curriculum: Liberal Arts

Secondary Curriculum: Montessori

Particularly popular in the younger grades (preschool to elementary), but sometimes available all the way up to high school, Montessori schools offer an alternative vision to the standard lesson format of most classrooms. Lessons are highly decentralized: children typically work individually (though sometimes with others) on specialized "Montessori materials" -- without interference from the teacher. The materials are self-correcting and teach the student something about the subject at hand. The method's goal is to develop children's innate desire to learn, while freeing up time for teachers to help children individually, as needed.

If you want to learn more about Montessori education, check out our comprehensive guide. You can also check out our guide to Montessori preschools, elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools.

What Vaudrin Academy says: While we offer English, French, and Spanish to every student starting at the age of 2, we also have the experience, knowledge, and neuroscientific programs to help students who are gifted or struggle academically even though they have average to above-average intelligence. Montessori is offered for preschool children aged 2 to 4.

    Social Studies Expanding Communities

The Expanding Communities approach organizes the curriculum around students’ present, everyday experience. In the younger grades, students might learn about themselves, for example. As they move through the grades, the focus gradually broadens in scope: to the family, neighbourhood, city, province, country, and globe. The curriculum tends to have less focus on history than Core Knowledge programs.

    Foreign Languages Communicative

The communicative method of language acquisition emphasizes the use of the target language in authentic contexts. The approach commonly features interactive group work, games, authentic texts, and opportunities to learn about the cultural background of the language. Drills and quizzes may still be used, but less frequently than with the audio-lingual method.

    Computers and Technology Heavy integration

A major effort is made to integrate the development of digital literacy throughout the curriculum and in everything students do. Digital literacy is understood to be a fundamental skill in the 21st century: it therefore follows, the idea goes, that teachers should find ways to connect every lesson back to technology. Effort is made to ensure the use of technology is meaningful and advances students’ skills beyond what they would otherwise be from using computers outside the classroom.

    Preschool/K Curriculum Montessori

    • Play-based
    • Montessori
    • Waldorf
    • Reggio Emilia
    • Academic

Montessori programs aimed at preschool and Kindergarten- aged children allow young learners to choose which “tasks” or activities interest them. These tasks centre around special Montessori puzzles -- the essential features of these puzzles being they contain a “right answer” and allow for self-correction. A strong emphasis is therefore placed on learning being concrete and rooted in practical experience, along with children developing a sense of self-sufficiency and confidence. Specially trained teachers act as guides, introducing children to progressively more difficult materials when appropriate. A Montessori classroom is typically very calm and orderly, with children working alone or, sometimes, in small groups.

If you want to learn more about Montessori education, check out our comprehensive guide. You can also check out our guide to Montessori preschools, elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools.

If you want to learn more about preschool education, check out our comprehensive guide. You can also read our in-depth answers to important preschool questions: What is preschool? What are the main preschool programs? What are the main pros and cons of preschool? What do children learn in preschool? How much does preschool cost?  What makes for a great preschool?

What Vaudrin Academy says: \"Play is the work of children,\" according to Jean Piaget, and it is also the basis for the official program from the Quebec Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Families. The Montessori preschool program for 2-4 year-olds is based on solid science and a child\'s natural development.

    Curriculum Pace Student-paced

    • Standard-enriched
    • Accelerated
    • Student-paced

The main curriculum pace is non-standardized and is HIGHLY responsive to the pacing of individual students, (via differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, etc). In theory, some students outpace the default/normalized curriculum, while others spend periods "behind schedule" if they need the extra time.

    Flexible pacing:

    Flexible pacing style = offered
    Subject-streaming (tracking)
    Multi-age classrooms as standard
    Ability-grouping (in-class) as common
    Frequent use of cyber-learning (at-their-own-pace)
    Regular guided independent study opportunities
    Differentiated assessment

What Vaudrin Academy says about flexible pacing: Since every child is different, each should have the opportunity to be exactly at his/her level.

    Academic Culture Supportive

    • Rigorous
    • Supportive

A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

What Vaudrin Academy says: While supportive, all students are continuously pushed towards excellence. We strongly encourage the growth mindset telling our students that they can achieve anything if they work hard enough and long enough. Perseverance is the key word.

    Developmental Priorities Balanced, Emotional

    Primary Developmental Priority: Balanced
Equal attention is paid to a balance of priorities: intellectual, emotional, social, and physical.

    Secondary Developmental Priority: Emotional
Emotionally intelligent and confident individuals, capable of leading both themselves and others.

What Vaudrin Academy says: In order to fully have access to our higher cognitive functions, we must be able to be self-regulated and feel confident, safe, and loved.

    Our Mission

Vaudrin Academy's healthy, innovative, and trilingual environment strengthens students' passion for learning, teaches 21st century skills to succeed in our ever-changing world, and nurtures students' self-esteem to surpass themselves daily. What this means in everyday life: * We make sure our students™ primary needs and emotional needs are met before even starting to teach them anything. * New ideas are cherished and tried even if they do not always work, and we learn from them. * Our teachers never give up on a child. There is always a way to make a student understand. * We do our best no matter who we are, what we are doing, where we are, or how we are feeling. * Everybody helps everybody. * Older students are in the habit of helping little ones tie their shoelaces or zip up their jackets. * Parents drive students to horse-backing riding and accompany us on field trips. * There is always a student who volunteers to bring a friend in if he/she falls outside. * Staff members give and receive about 50 hugs or high-fives per day. The smiles are infinite. * Our students and teachers come from Colombia, Bolivia, Mexico, South Africa, Great Britain, France, Taiwan, China, Guyana, India, etc. and all play together. * We only accept win-win solutions. * All kids take turns cleaning up the lunchroom. * Weekly staff meetings at lunch to exchange information, discuss ideas, and share feelings. * For the innovative strategies taken from around the world, well, you have to be part of our family to get those little secrets!
