Provincial funding for private schools

Check out government aid in your province

British Columbia
Independent schools are categorized into four groups. Schools that fall into Group 1 or 2 have met certain criteria for facilities and curriculum that qualify them for provincial funding. Group 1 schools receive 50 per cent of per-pupil operating costs of the local public school district, and Group 2 schools receive 35 per cent. For details, visit http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/independentschools/guidebook/guidec.pdf.

Alberta
Accredited independent schools that meet standards of curriculum, instruction hours, evaluation processes and more, and employ certified teachers, are eligible for 60 per cent of the per-pupil amount paid to public schools. For details, visit http://www.learning.gov.ab.ca/funding/FundingManual/pdf/3_1.pdf.

Saskatchewan
As of the 2011-12, Saskatchewan provides partial funding for private schools. In order to receive half of the per-student average provincial funding, independent schools must meet certain criteria, including following the provincial curriculum and policies, employing only certified teachers, and taking part in student assessments and inspections. For details visit the provincial website.

Manitoba
Independent schools that meet provincial curriculum standards and hire certified teachers are eligible for 50 per cent of the per-pupil amount paid to local public schools. For more information, visit http://www.edu.gov.mb.ca/ks4/sdds/indsch/funded_ind.html.

Quebec
Certified private schools that meet the standards of the provincial system are eligible for about 50 per cent of the per-pupil amount paid to public schools.

Ontario
In 2001, the Ontario government introduced the Equity in Education Tax Credit program to help families with the cost of independent school tuition. However, the program was cancelled in 2003, and no further tax credits are allowed under the program for tuition paid after Dec. 31, 2002.

* All other provinces do not provide funding to independent schools.
