The Our Kids review of British Columbia Christian Academy

our takeFounded in 1993, the BCCA story is much like that of the little engine that could: dogged persistence toward the goal. Despite a number of moves and growing pains, the school has reached its 25th anniversary stronger than ever, and also remaining very true to the goals of the founders. The school began its life as an expression of the community, with parents coming together around the idea of providing an interdenominational Christian education for their children. It has grown over the years, though that ideal remains, namely to serve families and to include them, unequivocally, within the life of the school. This recent anniversary has provided a moment to pause and consider the successes that the school has had, as well as to reflect a bit on what’s ahead. Certainly, it’s a continuing story. BCCA offers an opportunity for students to engage within a shared culture of belief, and to live and learn though a Christian lens. Values are important, and that piece, in consort with a proven academic program, is what draws families to the school.

Principal's Message

principal

Ian Jarvie, Head Principal

For 25 years, British Columbia Christian Academy has been educating young people in the Tri-City area from the greater Vancouver region, as well as students that come to us from around the world.  We serve students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 from a very diverse background that have their history stemming from over 40 countries.

Our mission is to assist the family by providing a Christ-centered, Bible-based education that inspires each student to pursue excellence in spiritual growth, moral character, academics, fine arts, physical fitness and service to others.  We do all of these in an environment with a strong community that has compassion for one another.

Our students are taught to be intentional—striving for mastery in everything they do.  In order to do this, the students are taught to take ownership of their learning and to set goals which will allow them to excel in all areas, according to their giftings.

BC Christian Academy has put in place opportunities for students to obtain high academic training through Advance Placement (AP) courses being offered at the senior level.  This allows our students to get dual credits for their AP courses, receiving credit at the high school and university level.

BC Christian Academy is renowned for its strong community where there is truly a partnership between the home and school.   Our families will say that BC Christian Academy is like their second home because the faculty and staff truly care for all the children and families in the school, and are there to help them through life’s challenges as they arise.

Take some time to visit our website at www.bcchristianacademy.ca to learn more about our school community.  You will find a detailed description of what we do and will see many testimonies provided by our families.

Many of our athletes have represented our province and our country on both provincial and national teams. We strive to build an athletic program that reaches out to all athletes. What BC Christian Academy says: The school uses the framework of Creation, Fall and Redemption while exploring God's original plan and intent on these areas in explaining Physical, Sexuality and Health Education.

    Approach:
    Mostly value-neutral

By and large, we teach sex education free of any particular moral or ethical standpoint. We try not to impose any particular values or value systems (such as social, political, or ideological values) on our students when teaching sex and related issues.

    Fairly value-based

Sex education is sometimes taught from a particular moral or ethical standpoint. Sometimes particular values or value systems (such as social, political, or ideological values) are invoked when teaching sex and related issues.

    Traditional

This includes a range of positions. A traditional approach might, for example, go as far as emphasizing the nuclear family and complete abstinence from sex before marriage. Alternatively, this approach might simply involve placing less emphasis on sex outside of the context of marriage and more emphasis on abstinence. Or finally, it might just involve focusing less on sex outside of the context of marriage.

69 % of Our Kids' schools use a traditional approach for sex and health education

    Progressive

This might mean more emphasis is placed on the importance of such things as social equality, diversity, and choice in sex education.

    Preschool/K Curriculum Play-based

    • Play-based
    • Montessori
    • Waldorf
    • Reggio Emilia
    • Academic

Play-based programs are the most common type of preschool and Kindergarten, and are founded on the belief young children learn best through play. Largely open-ended and minimally structured, play-based programs aim to develop social skills and a love of attending school. “Pre-academic” skills are taught, but in a more indirect way than at, say, an Academic program: through children playing in different “stations” set up around the classroom, which children choose on their own volition. Stations often contain an indirect lesson or developmental goal. Play-based classrooms are highly social and active.

If you want to learn more about preschool education, check out our comprehensive guide. You can also read our in-depth answers to important preschool questions: What is preschool? What are the main preschool programs? What are the main pros and cons of preschool? What do children learn in preschool? How much does preschool cost?  What makes for a great preschool?

What BC Christian Academy says: Our comfortable, caring and secure environment fosters natural curiosity as they freely explore their classroom. The equipment and furnishings are geared towards their level to allow children to be independent and develop confidence. Children are natural learners, and our curriculum acknowledges this by providing both teacher-directed and child-initiated learning. We encourage and guide each child’s natural curiosity to ensure that they are engaged and supported through the joys and challenges of growing up.

    Curriculum Pace Standard-enriched

    • Standard-enriched
    • Accelerated
    • Student-paced

Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.

    Flexible pacing:

    Flexible pacing style = offered
    Subject-streaming (tracking)
    Multi-age classrooms as standard
    Ability-grouping (in-class) as common
    Frequent use of cyber-learning (at-their-own-pace)
    Regular guided independent study opportunities
    Differentiated assessment

    Academic Culture Supportive

    • Rigorous
    • Supportive

A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

    What BC Christian Academy says:
    • Athletes are encouraged and taught about the Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ “Competitors Creed” and are encouraged to implement it not only when they compete but in everything they do. Our foundational verse for our program is 1 Corinthians 10:31, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” There are a variety of sports in which our athletes can take part and they will be taught by some of the top coaches in their sport. Many of our athletes have represented our province and our country on both provincial and national teams. We strive to build an athletic program that reaches out to all athletes. We help them find purpose that enables them to reach out to others and make a difference for Christ.

    THANKFUL TO BCCA DONORS

Stepping through the doors of BC Christian Academy in 2008, with the warm smiles and grace of staff, parents and students filling the hall, Rosemary knew instantly that this was the right school for eight year old Yakira.  That was 8 years ago and still Rosemary feels that same welcoming spirit every time she comes to drop off and pick up Yakira, now in Grade 10.
Rosemary is a living testament of the school's needs-based rather than merit-based tuition assistance.  As a new immigrant from Holland, Rosemary—who first came to Canada with her husband, older son Sean and daughter Yakira—was simply keen on pursuing and securing a better life for their family.   It did not come all too easy, a common story to most people migrating.  Still without a job, Rosemary met with the school principal and has made known their financial condition and her desire to enroll Yakira to BCCA.  Instantly, the school recognized the financial support that Rosemary needed to raise and educate Yakira in a school community of warm and caring people.  Indeed, Rosemary testifies to the three pillars or 3 C’s of Christ, Community and Compassion that the school stands for.  “It is a real thing in the school,” said Rosemary.
Yakira has been so happy to be in BCCA. She instantly made friends and settled quite quickly and comfortably.  She would refuse to come home right away and would be involved in various sports and activities in the school.  Not only had Yakira become closer to her fellow students but also with her teachers who took time to assist her with her school work.
But just when things are slowly picking up for the family, life took a different turn in 2011 when Rosemary’s older son Sean had died tragically in a drowning accident in Kelowna.   Having personally witnessed this, Rosemary was filled with overwhelming sadness and grief.   It was not long after that when her husband, whom she had hoped to rely on more than anyone else, decided to leave her and Yakira.  "I thought my whole world had fallen apart and I could no longer continue on,” cries Rosemary.  “I was not sure how to move on and bring Yakira up all by myself.”  Rosemary even considered pulling her daughter out of BCCA and to move somewhere else.  “But it was in the four corners of this school that I have found comfort and support to carry on. I am not alone, I have the school to come alongside me in raising my daughter Yakira."
Anytime that Rosemary is grieved with deep sorrow for the loss of her son and her husband who abandoned them, Rosemary receives hugs and prayers from the principals, staff and teachers.   It is the school community that has showered Yakira with love that makes up for the father that she no longer sees.  The school is like a family—the staff, teachers and students know Yakira—and there is no doubt that Rosemary and Yakira are loved and cared for.
Rosemary's story is not the only one at BCCA.  Last 2015-16 school year, about 44% of our students who are receiving tuition support are from single-parent families and are being supported financially by our donors.
We are pleased that we have helped Rosemary and a few more, but there are more single-parent families out there who are in need.  We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with our generous donors in this great cause.

BCCA IS THE RIGHT SCHOOL FOR MY KIDS

Choosing the right school for my two children has been a very daunting task that haunted me for over two years. While most schools have great mission, vision and value statements, I soon realized that very few schools can actually implement them. To me, a good school is not about being top of school rankings or pumping out straight A students, it is about guiding each student to reach for his/her own personal potentials –academically, emotionally and spiritually.

We finally came to BCCA after trying out a couple other public and private schools, which just didn’t feel right for us. You can’t judge a book by its cover and you most certainly can’t judge a school by its looks and size. Who would know that hidden inside a humble building is a community packed with such vibrant energy, love and faith? The C Our Story Tour brought tears to my eyes as I learned how the school has touched the lives of so many families.  I loved walking up and down the hallways just to experience the atmosphere.  For me, what made BCCA stand out from all the other schools were the warmth I felt from all the smiley faces that I passed by every day at the school, the remarkable interactions I saw amongst students of all grades, and the high-fives flying across the hallways. We have finally found our second home! At BCCA, my children are surrounded by many loving and caring people – teachers, staff, classmates and parents – who share the same goal of building a supportive and safe learning environment that embraces acceptance, inclusiveness and love.

BCCA BRINGS HOPE AND HELPS BUILD DREAMS

Gloria had a tough life at a young age. Extremely shy, Gloria was bullied in grade 3 and had to deal with her dad leaving her mom, her twin brothers and younger sister a year after. Gloria had to switch schools so many times in and out of the province in her remaining elementary and early high school years. She was feeling unsure about herself, hopeless about her future, and guilty about things that aren’t her fault. It was in BC Christian Academy that Gloria has found HOPE in overcoming all these.  “I remember being so nervous because I wasn’t sure if I would be able to make friends. I was extremely shy at that time and struggled in speaking English,” Gloria recalled. “The transition was hard in the beginning but I quickly sensed the love and care of my teachers and classmates. All the good things I heard about this school were true.”

The family soon went through a lot of financial difficulty after Gloria’s father had left them. At the end of grade 6, Gloria’s mom decided that they needed a fresh start and saw the need for herself and her children to move back to Montreal. “That was one of the loneliest moments in my life when I did not even get the chance to say goodbye to any of my school friends in BCCA,” Gloria remembered.  “We came back to BCCA in 2014 and felt the warm welcome of everyone in the school. I was really scared to come back for fear that my friends will judge me and make fun of me, but none of that happened. Everyone in BCCA showed love and compassion towards me. I was enveloped with love, comfort and grace in every way by such caring people. BCCA has helped me rebuild myself and helped me build new dreams again not just for myself but for my family.”

THANKS TO THE GREAT GENEROSITY OF BCCA

A family could not believe that even when they are experiencing financial hardship, Christian education is still a possibility for their children.

“In my mind, I thought that there was no way that we would ever be  able to get our children into BCCA.  My husband, due to long-term health issues, had been on a disability benefit for many years and was told years ago that he would likely never work again.  After much encouragement to go and talk with staff at the school, and the ever increasing weight on my heart that we could no longer continue home schooling, we contacted the school and arranged for a “C” Our Story Tour.

We were very impressed with the school which had a big heart for the community. It made us long for our kids and ourselves to be part of it. The teachers who showed us around and the staff who interviewed us were so friendly, compassionate and understanding and this had touched our hearts so deeply.  We went home and filled out forms, still not believing that it might be a reality for our kids to attend BC Christian Academy. Our family was very thankful to the LORD, to those who have made it possible for our children to attend BCCA and to be shaped by God in this place for His purpose.
