Dear Parents,

In this second decade of the 21st century Sunnybrook invites you to become a part of a very special school. Flexible, dynamic, lively learning to challenge, provoke and engage the young mind will prepare students for a changing, exciting world.

It is my pleasure to introduce you to our school. With a long, proud history of innovation, leading to the present, Sunnybrook is at a dramatic new crossroads. We have opened an exciting extension and are celebrating our 60th anniversary in 2012. We search the world for excellence in elementary education, bringing world class programmes to our school.

This led Sunnybrook to become an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. The IB Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) enriches and complements our philosophy, giving us an outstanding framework for assessment and curriculum development. The IB Program enables us to give our students the world. In our search for excellence, we have adopted the Singapore Math Programme, an enlightened, engaging and effective approach to mathematics learning.

Sunnybrook has remained small because we believe that small schools are good for both students and teachers. With our focus on JK – grade 6 we can direct our expertise and energy toward creating an exciting curriculum and learning environment for the young learner. Our graduates benefit from the small school environment by becoming confident, self-assured, inquiring young people, ready for the world of a larger middle school. They enjoy being the ʻbig kid in the small schoolʼ before moving on to larger middle schools.

Passionate teachers have the power to excite and inspire young people. Our faculty is both the heart and the backbone of our dynamic school. The core of a teacherʼs work is to foster learning, which is easy with their enthusiasm for childrenʼs learning. Our qualified teachers have extensive IB training. Five members of our staff are on the faculty of IB and I am a past member of the IB Board of Directors and serve on the IB Education Committee.
Young children are natural learners. At Sunnybrook School we succeed in channeling the energy, enthusiasm and joy of elementary boys and girls into disciplined, thoughtful learning. Boys and girls benefit from learning in our co-ed environment. The small size of our school enables us to know our students and their families, giving greater meaning to the triangle of child, home and school. Our size also enables us to showcase all our students and their work.

Choosing an elementary school is an exciting time for families. This information package is designed to answer many of your questions, but it cannot give you the flavour of our vibrant learning community. I encourage you to come and experience the uniqueness of Sunnybrook School. The minute you walk in the door you will discover a school for the 21st century. I look forward to meeting you and discussing your childʼs gifts and needs.

Hoping to see you soon,

Irene Davy, PhD
Director

Our teachers create an exciting learning environment experience in which each child can reach his or her potential. We value diversity, which is why we offer a coed learning experience. Sunnybrook teaches the International Baccalaureate Primary Years program, an engaging curriculum for students in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6. Through active inquiry and exploration, our students acquire 21st-century skills and knowledge. We foster an active role in the community; our students grow from being citizens in their school to becoming global citizens of the future. At Sunnybrook, daily French classes focus on communication skills and an understanding of the cultural nature of language. Technology enhances and enriches learning in all areas of the curriculum, from JK - Grade 6. Creativity blossoms when students are given the freedom to express themselves combined with the discipline to learn the necessary skills. Physical activity brings out the best in children and in our phys-ed program; SBS students become active athletes. Sunnybrook School is a lively and nurturing academic community for young learners. Come and see for yourself.
