When we founded Richland Academy almost a decade ago, we had a clear vision as educators of what was and was not working in childhood education. We envisioned a learning environment that did not tether our children to a rigid curriculum, but rather guided and inspired them to learn. While recognizing young learners need a solid foundation in all aspects of academics, they must also develop strategies and problem-solving skills that address the challenges they may face later in life. Our Faculty and Staff have since created an environment that allows students to uncover their passions through hands-on inquiry and experiential learning that builds creativity, problem solving and team building skills. We were early adopters of the 21st Century Learning Initiative’s goal to develop and implement new approaches to learning that draw upon insights into the human brain, functioning of societies and learning as a community. As countless graduates and their parents will attest, Richland Academy has succeeded in greatly enriching the lives of our students with its strong curriculum, innovative teaching methods and character enrichment initiatives. At the same time, we are continuing our journey to create the best learning environment possible. Recently, we have begun integrating methods inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach. This well-researched philosophy of teaching has captured the imagination of thousands of educators globally — requiring children to be seen as competent, resourceful, curious, imaginative, inventive, and possessing a desire to interact and communicate with others. As educators, we are very excited by the potential a Reggio-inspired education offers. We are also excited each day as our students astound us with their talents and achievements, their capacity for learning, and their desire to learn about the world around them. We would be delighted to help your child experience “the best day ever” every day at Richland Academy and we welcome the opportunity to share our story. Sincerely,
Marlina Oliveira
