A Community Collaboration Celebrates the Holidays

In joyful celebration of the holidays, the Glenholme School Choral Assembly and the Shepaug Strings Ensemble joined together on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 to perform a sensational holiday concert for students, families, friends, and staff in the Glenholme Center for the Arts. The near 60-minute performance opened with an instrumental segment by the Shepaug Strings Ensemble, during which the ten member orchestra - comprised of violin, viola, cello, and bass players - performed three movements of Arcangelo Corelli's Christmas Concerto. After the Strings Ensemble accompanied the thirty-member Glenholme Choral Assembly for five traditional holiday songs, including a fun-filled sing-along with the audience, the Choral Assembly performed four songs on their own, each highlighting one of the many holidays celebrated during the season. Enhanced by the impressive acoustics of The Center for the Arts, the sound of strings and voices filled the room, enveloping the audience in holiday warmth, excitement, and cheer. In its second year, the partnership between The Glenholme School and Shepaug has proven to be a huge success, resulting in another exceptional holiday concert in The Center for the Arts. Glenholme prides itself on having a strong Arts program, and has made it a priority to collaborate with other schools and organizations in the community. By performing with students from other schools, Glenholme students learn positive ways to communicate and work together, make new friends, and develop an appreciation for others' talents and abilities. Glenholme Honors Outstanding Staff

Each year, The Glenholme School honors an outstanding direct care staff member with the Thomas F. Donovan Culture of Caring Award. Throughout his Devereux career, Thomas Donovan emphasized the importance of treatment expertise and innovation in a caring, supportive environment. A loyal supporter of Devereux, Mr. Donovan was elected to the Devereux Board of Trustees in May of 1989, became Vice Chairman in 1992, and served as Chairman of the Board from 1997 to November of 2002. He remains an active member of the Board to this day. To honor Mr. Donovan's steadfast commitment to Devereux's mission, the Devereux Board of Trustees established the Thomas F. Donovan Culture of Caring Award in 2002. This annual award recognizes the outstanding personal and professional service of one direct care staff member from each Devereux center who typifies the spirit of caring that has long been the hallmark of Devereux's 100-year legacy. The Glenholme School is proud to announce that its 2011 Thomas F. Donovan Award recipient is Natasha Van Geersdaele. As a residential staff for just over a year, Natasha's dedication, creativity, and enthusiasm have already made her a vital member of the Glenholme community. She diligently plans engaging, fun, and therapeutic activities and outings for students, while always paying close attention to each student's treatment goals. Respected by students and colleagues alike, Natasha is flexible, resourceful, and considerate to those around her. Her ever-present smile, positive "can do" attitude, and willingness to go the extra mile make her an exemplar for the entire Glenholme community. Congratulations, Natasha, on this much deserved award! Glenholme Students Honor America's Heroes

In concert with hundreds of communities across the nation, students of The Glenholme School participated in a wreath-laying ceremony on Saturday, December 10, 2011 to honor America's servicemen and women this holiday season. The ceremony, held at Judea Cemetery in Washington, CT, was led by Corporal James Gollsneider (USMC retired) and representatives of the Judea Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Sheila Anson and Cindy Brissett of DAR shared the inspirational story behind the wreath-laying tradition, begun by Morrill Worcester, owner of the Worcester Wreath Company in Harrington, Maine. When faced with a surplus of wreaths in 1992, Mr. Worcester arranged for the extra wreaths to be placed on the headstones of veterans in Arlington Cemetery - a place that had made an indelible impression on him as a twelve-year-old boy. The tribute was quietly repeated each holiday season until 2005, when an image of the wreaths circulated around the web and the project suddenly received national attention. In 2007, a group of veterans and volunteers collaborated with the Worcester family to found the non-profit organization Wreaths Across America (WAA). Corporal Gollsneider highlighted the meaning behind the tradition, stating, "Gatherings like this are not simply a fond remembrance of courage and sacrifice from good citizens. They are a reminder that eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. Our nation was founded on the virtues of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, which became the cornerstones of a new nation. They also became the beacon for the rest of the world and an example for other cultures to examine and emulate." With those words in mind, the volunteers set out across the cemetery to place the wreaths on veterans' headstones. As in years past, the wreaths were hand-crafted by Painter Ridge Farm in Washington, CT. Glenholme student Andrew Russo accompanied Corporal Gollsneider to several graves, where, side by side, they honored the veterans - Corporal Gollsneider with a salute and Andrew with his hand over his heart. Each year, on the second Saturday of December, the nation pauses to give thanks to those men and women who selflessly fought to protect our freedom. In 2010, WAA and a network of volunteers laid over 220,000 memorial wreaths in 545 locations throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, and beyond. The Glenholme community is proud to be a part of this annual salute to America's veterans. Thanksgiving Food Drive: Giving to Those Less Fortunate

This holiday season, students at The Glenholme School clearly demonstrated the importance of kindness and community service by participating in the school's annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. During the month-long effort, students in the school's Community Service Program collected donations from Glenholme families and staff, which they used to create seventeen complete Thanksgiving Day feasts for local families in need. Each basket included all of the traditional holiday fixings, a gift-card for a turkey, and heartfelt notes to the recipients. The finished baskets were delivered to a thankful team at the VNA Northwest, Inc of Bantam on Monday, November 21, 2011, who distributed them to local families in time for the holiday. Even during these trying economic times, the families and faculty of The Glenholme School increased their giving effort by nearly 50% over last year - an exceptional achievement given the modest size of the school population. From campus fund raisers and food drives to nursing home visits and environmental efforts, Glenholme's philanthropic and community service efforts have a positive effect on the community and on those who dedicate their time to volunteering. By giving to others, students also give to themselves: they develop a sense of personal achievement, overcome obstacles, gain new perspectives, and learn and practice positive values that promote good decision making. Quantum Learning: An Inspirational Experience

When you hear resounding responses to an instructor's request that bellow from a classroom - you know something exciting is happening. This wasn't just an ordinary class; it was a training session for Glenholme's education, boarding and administrative faculty members. At The Glenholme School, the professional growth of employees is central to the efficacy of the program and in mid-November, faculty members were inspired by the Quantum Learning program. Quantum Learning, co-founded by Bobbi DePorter, president of the Quantum Learning Network, provides research-based comprehensive learning programs for educators and administrators, as well as students and parents, to help create a positive, supportive atmosphere that reinforces learning. As a boarding school for students with special needs; Glenholme's milieu utilizes principals of Positive Behavior Supports to help students achieve their goals and the Quantum Learning series, is an ideal complement to the Glenholme program. The week-long training at Glenholme was delivered by the energetic Christian Rauch, who employed Quantum Learning's visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning strategies that incorporated music, color and movement to enhance involvement and retention. In addition to the three learning styles, faculty members were instructed on the elements of "The 8 Keys of Excellence" and the framework to initiate positive change aimed to increase student engagement and achievement in their environment. "Quantum Learning has empowered me to enhance my methods of teaching," said one seasoned faculty member. While a boarding staff member noted, "I'm really looking forward to utilizing what I have learned in the cottage." Over 55,000 teachers have been trained in Quantum Learning methods since its school programs launched in 1991, that in turn, impacts approximately eight million students. A Halloween That Almost Wasn't

Every fall, as the air gets crisper and the leaves turn to orange, the excitement of Halloween begins to build. On this popular holiday, students throughout the country take a break from the day-to-day routine to decorate, dress up, eat candy, and have some spooky, silly fun. However, when October 31 arrived, Glenholme was still enduring the effects of the nor'easter that rolled through the state on Saturday, October 29. When over a foot of heavy, wet snow met an abundance of fall foliage, the result was nothing shy of a disaster that destroyed utility lines and caused a record number of outages across Connecticut. On Monday, the Glenholme community was among the weary who still did not have power. While the generators hummed and the utility crews worked tirelessly to restore power - the supernatural ghosts, goblins, and heroes awaited the Halloween that almost wasn't. But no amount of snow, darkness, or gloom could keep this beloved holiday from the Glenholme campus. On the unusually warm autumn day of November 7, Halloween arrived. The students of Pueblo and Birchwood traded their snow boots and coats for costumes and candy bags, and trick-or-treated across campus to the enjoyment of all. Afterwards, the younger students attended the annual Monster Mash in The Commons. Organized and hosted by the male students of Glen Ridge, this fun-filled event included games such as Spooky Limbo, Hidden Spider, Mummy Wrap, and a Costume Contest. Later in the evening, DJs Spencer Stoff and Brad Marston entertained the older students at the Halloween Social with a high-energy medley of dance, pop, rock, and classic Halloween tunes. Halloween festivities and other community building activities are essential to the social and emotional learning of students with special needs. By participating in traditions - such as planning social events, putting together costumes, and attending school dances - students are given the opportunity to develop teamwork skills, initiate and maintain conversations, interpret body language, and strengthen friendships. These social events, which occur throughout the year, foster a positive, supportive environment and create a sense of school spirit and community. Happy belated Halloween! An Evening to Benefit The Glenholme School at the Bryant Park Grill

On educational campuses throughout the world, involvement in extracurricular activities is viewed as essential to each student's personal development. Two outcome studies conducted at The Glenholme School, "The Effects of Engagement in Instructional Extracurricular Activities on Children's Behavioral Functioning," and "The Impact of Preferred Activities on Residential Programming on Children's Behavioral Functioning," demonstrate that active involvement in enrichment programming, such as the Arts, gives special needs students a newfound sense of confidence, and promotes emotional, intellectual, creative, and social growth. These positive changes permeate into all aspects of the students' lives, helping them to better master their treatment plan goals. With these benefits in mind, we were eager to expand and enhance our Arts offerings, and began constructing The Center for the Arts in November of 2009. This 10,000 square-foot building contains two visual art galleries, a 299 seat theater, and ample space for rehearsals and professional performances. Although the Glenholme community celebrated The Center for the Arts' Grand Opening in May of 2011, the space remained in need of sound, lighting, and projection systems in order to be complete. As we looked to continue to finance the building's completion and endowment, the members of the Glenholme Planning and Development Board chose to host the first off-site fund-raising event to support the school's Arts program. In preparation, the Board members secured the event space, solicited items to be auctioned off, coordinated the entertainment, publicized the event, and generously donated their time, money, and talent toward making sure no detail went overlooked. After much anticipation, the Board hosted a gathering of New York's finest friends at The Bryant Park Grill on the evening of Wednesday, October 19, 2011. The event, spearheaded by Board members Barbara Feeney and Robin Baron, featured a cocktail hour, an elegant buffet dinner, a raffle, a silent auction, a live auction, and a performance by the critically acclaimed band, October Project. Situated in the heart of Manhattan's Bryant Park, the Bryant Park Grill provided an ideal space for festivities, food, and music. The evening began with Glenholme's administration, Board members, and current and past parents mixing and mingling with friends, co-workers, and new acquaintances. After a welcome and introduction by Executive Administrator Judy Cooper, Assistant Executive Director Dr. Patrick Queenan spoke about Glenholme's data-driven approach, and why it makes the program so successful. Board Chair Rick Doucette, a former Glenholme parent, spoke passionately about his son's experiences at the school. Executive Director Maryann Campbell then addressed the crowd. After thanking the Board Members for their efforts, she played a short film about the Arts at Glenholme, featuring interviews with numerous Glenholme students and staff. This informative, funny, and heartwarming film allowed the students to share - in their own words - the positive impact that The Glenholme School has had on each of their lives. After a lovely dinner and a moving performance by October Project, Board member Robin Baron took the stage as the evening's auctioneer. Her energy and charisma held the crowd's attention, and her faith in Glenholme’s mission inspired them to contribute to the live auction and to the newly created Student Scholarship Fund. Our goal at this event was to raise sufficient funds to achieve a $100,000 matching grant from the Hearst Foundation- and we are thrilled to say that we succeeded! With the funds raised, we can now bring The Center for the Arts to life with quality sound, lighting, and projection systems. Thank you to everyone who helped to make The Center for the Arts a reality! Your donation acknowledges the positive impact that the Arts have on all Glenholme students, now and in the future. Grandparents are Celebrated at Glenholme

Grandparents play a critical role in the upbringing, education, and character development of children. Alongside National Grandparents Day, Glenholme's annual Grandparents' Day event celebrates the positive impact that these individuals have on the lives of young people with special needs. On September 23, families from across the country gathered at Glenholme for the school's Fourth Annual Grandparents' Day celebration. Over eighty-five family members attended the event - the largest turnout to date - and their enthusiasm could not be damped by the early autumn rains. After the guests enjoyed a lovely luncheon with the Glenholme administration, students led their families on tours of the campus under the cover of umbrellas. Students shared their classrooms, cottages, and the vast array of activity offerings on campus, including the equestrian and fitness programs, the go-kart track, drama and music offerings, and the culinary program. The afternoon culminated with a presentation and performance in the recently opened Center for the Arts. After Glenholme Executive Director Maryann Campbell greeted the families and spoke passionately about the Arts, the students presented a wonderful selection of instrumental and vocal solos and duets, demonstrating the incredible impact that the school's Arts program has had on their self-esteem, confidence, and skills. On the community level, Glenholme's Grandparents' Day provides students and staff with the opportunity to publicly affirm the importance of grandparents and the vital role that they play. It also offers grandparents a glimpse into the everyday lives of their grandchildren, strengthening the bond between grandparent and grandchild. It is Glenholme's hope that this important celebration continues to grow, year after year. On behalf of the entire Glenholme community: "Thank you, grandparents, for all you do!" At the Education Open House, Parents and Faculty Do the Learning

Every parent strives to be involved in his or her child's education to the fullest extent possible, and yearns for a glimpse into their child's daily life at school. They may wonder: Who is my child's favorite teacher? Where is his or her desk? What subjects is he or she struggling with, or excelling in? What did he or she learn about today? On Friday, October 14, Glenholme parents, many of whom were new to the school, were welcomed into the schoolhouse for their own glimpse into the school's academic program. At the Education Open House, one of many informative events offered during the year for Glenholme families, parents met their child's teachers, learned about their child's curriculum through SmartBoard productions, displays and presentations, and shared their goals for their child. At Glenholme, parental involvement is viewed as a basic tenant of an effective treatment program, and positive parental engagement is encouraged at all levels of school life - from academic programs to daily activities. Parents often provide insightful contributions, which help to strengthen academic and social programs, both for their child and for the Glenholme community at large. Through regularly scheduled events, including open houses, gatherings, and training sessions, Glenholme encourages and promotes a collaborative environment between parents and faculty, creating the positive relationships essential to supporting each child's total development.

Students Cast Their Ballots

The benefits of Glenholme's student leadership programs are tremendous: through meaningful participation both in and beyond the classroom, students demonstrate their talents and interests, develop confidence in their abilities, and improve their advocacy, public speaking, teamwork, and decision making skills. This level of active involvement, rarely afforded to Glenholme students in their previous school placements, creates a greater sense of ownership and investment in the Glenholme program. One such leadership program, the Glenholme Student Council, allows students to share their ideas, interests, and concerns with the school's administration, faculty, and parents. Through a variety of school-wide activities, the group also raises funds for campus projects and scholarships. Their recent contributions have had a positive impact across campus: in 2008, the Student Council gifted a bench to put outside the schoolhouse's Science Wing, and in 2009, they donated the Glenholme Grizzly mascot costume that regularly inspires school spirit at sporting venues and campus events. Last year, the Student Council held a contest to create a Glenholme flag and, this year, they plan to raise funds for a flag pole, so that this new source of school pride can be prominently displayed on campus. The Student Council officer positions are vital to the success of the organization, and competition among this year's candidates was keen. Thirteen upperclassmen entered the race for six coveted positions including President, Vice President, Treasurer, Executive at Large, Secretary and Public Relations. The three weeks of campaigning concluded on Friday, October 21, when the student body watched the candidate speeches during the Friday morning Glenholme News report, cast their ballots for their favorite candidates, and waited for the tally to be announced. In their speeches, two candidates expressed their position well and ultimately prevailed in the race: Amy, a candidate for Student Council Secretary said, "I will not make any promises that I cannot keep, but I will keep an open mind for endless possibilities." Vice Presidential candidate Matt noted, "I'm doing this to take reasonable ideas that bring positive change to our school, and put them into action." Congratulations to the  Glenholme Student Council officers. We look forward to another year of fun activities and positive changes! The Hoe Down - A Heel-Stompin' Good Time

Aficionados of all things country western rejoiced at the annual fall Hoe Down, organized by The Glenholme School's Equestrian Program. The crisp autumn afternoon of October 25 provided the ideal opportunity for students to enjoy a break from the rigors of academic work, gather in the horse barn with their fellow peers, and enjoy some equestrian-themed fun. Students and staff shared smiles and laughs while enjoying snacks, cider, and hot chocolate, and participating in country music karaoke, a western-style photo booth, the tin can toss, horse shoes, lassoing, and more. Community-building events such as the Hoe Down are vital to the social and emotional learning of students with special needs. Students practice initiating and maintaining conversations, interpreting body language, waiting their turn, and trying new things... all while having fun! Regularly scheduled to occur throughout the year, these social events help to create a positive, supportive environment, strengthen friendships, and create a sense of school spirit and community. Glenholme Girls Give Back

Almost everyone’s life has been touched by breast cancer in some way – whether a loved one has just been diagnosed or a friend has survived – and the Glenholme community is no exception. This October, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the girls of Glenholme joined together to support their beloved teacher who is currently battling the disease. On Monday, October 24, 2011, the Glenholme students of G2, Rose Court, and Vanholme hosted their first ever philanthropy event in the gym. Clad in shades of pink, the girls collected donations at the door, sold baked goods, homemade bracelets, and bookmarks, and led the students and staff in limbo and other group games. During a break in the student DJed music, three of the girls gave heartfelt speeches in which they thanked everyone for their support, explained the history of the Susan G. Komen foundation, and honored their teacher, who was be sent a video of the event to watch. The first of many fund-raising activities the girls are planning, this fun, high energy, and inspirational event allowed the Glenholme community to come together to raise money and awareness for a truly worthwhile cause. With the funds raised, the girls will go to a salon to get feathers or pink extensions woven into their hair. The salon will then donate all of the funds to the Susan G. Komen foundation, which aims to find a cure for breast cancer. From campus fundraisers and clean-ups to nursing home visits and environmental efforts, Glenholme’s philanthropic and community service efforts have a positive effect on the community and on those who dedicate their time to volunteering. By giving to others, students also give to themselves: they develop a sense of personal achievement, overcome obstacles, gain new perspectives, and learn and practice positive values that promote good decision making. With their efforts to fight for a cure, these female students exemplify the Glenholme character values of kindness and community service. The entire Glenholme community applauds them for their thoughtfulness, compassion, and hard work. For more pictures from the event and other great campus news, check out the Glenholme blog! The Back to School Fall Festival

In October 10, The Glenholme School officially kicked off the new academic year with its annual Back to School Fall Festival. The beautiful golds and reds of New England's foliage are Mother Nature's signs that the school year is in full swing, and the afternoon's warm autumn weather was ideal for the carnival event. Excited students packed the activity booths to try their hand at jousting matches, obstacle courses, bungee runs competition, pitching cages, and balloon pops, while enjoying snow cones, popcorn, cotton candy, and funnel cake. Face painting, jewelry making, guessing games, an oatmeal dig, and a wide assortment of prizes rounded out the afternoon fun. At schools throughout the world, the annual carnival is one of the most beloved traditions. Similarly, at Glenholme, the fall carnival is always a student and staff favorite. This much anticipated event encompasses the feelings of excitement and the countless possibilities that accompany a new school year. The Festival provides students with an opportunity to socialize with their fellow peers, try new activities, and just have some good old fashioned fun! No Bones About It: Glenholme's Canine Collection

The delightful autumn day of October 1, was ideal for the twenty-three dogs and their families to gather on the Glenholme campus for the eighth annual Canine Collection. Held every fall, this beloved dog show celebrates the extraordinary bond between a dog and his or her owner, and the positive impact that animals can have on each of our lives. With an audience amassed on the hillside overlooking the arena, participants paraded their pooches, performing tricks, and showed off of some wonderfully creative costumes. Each participant received a certificate of award along with a Cherrybrook.com gift card, generously donated by Cherrybrook Premium Pet Supplies. The dogs also enjoyed some yummy biscuits, backed by Glenholme students. Thanks to the Glenholme families, students, staff, and friends, the annual Canine Collection was once again a huge success. Glenholme Welcomes Educational Consultants to Campus

On Wednesday, September 28, The Glenholme School greeted sixteen educational consultants from across the country, as part of a regional tour of schools for special needs students. The afternoon event began with a greeting by Executive Director Maryann Campbell, who discussed the history of the school and highlighted the vast opportunities available to Glenholme students. After a delightful luncheon prepared by the culinary students, the consultants took a tour of the campus, including the newly opened Center for the Arts, several student cottages, the equestrian center, and the schoolhouse. The afternoon wrapped up with a panel discussion, during which the educational consultants had the opportunity to ask an eight-member student panel questions about their time at Glenholme. Representing a cross-section of the student body, the panel was comprised of male and female students in grades 6 through 12, each with different interests and experiences at the school. When asked, "How has the program at Glenholme benefited you?," one student replied, "Glenholme is like an investment - only better than a 401K. What you put into it is what you get out and more. I've learned to make an investment in my relationships, my interests, and my education." Back to School!

On September 7, students and staff excitedly gathered in The Center for the Arts for the annual Back to School Assembly. Glenholme's Director of Education, Ms. Murphy, welcomed the students back to campus, spoke about the importance of a strong school community, and encouraged the students to have another successful and productive year. Ms. Murphy also went over changes and updates to the school day schedule (all students will now eat lunch together) and discussed new opportunities for students in academics, technology, on-line learning, the Arts, athletics, and the equestrian and culinary programs. In the school house, students happily reconnected with friends and teachers, and introduced themselves to new faces. Glenholme Executive Director Maryann Campbell stopped by to visit each classroom, and even led a few fun group activities in the gymnasium during a P.E. class! The 2011-2012 school year follows an incredible summer of creative afternoon camp activities, countless off-campus adventures, and an outstanding student production of "The Wizard of Oz." A Celebration of Commitment

On September 12, 2011 Glenholme kicked off their annual Boarding Recognition Week to honor the boarding faculty- a group of talented, vibrant, and enthusiastic individuals. This celebration, which was in conjunction with the National Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week, recognized the commitment of these dedicated individuals and thanked them for choosing the noble path to guide and support young people to leading productive, meaningful lives. Each day as the boarding faculty contribute to this cause, they solidify the mission of Glenholme and are part of a greater purpose. It is a fulfilling role in life and we are sincerely grateful. The Glenholme community has benefited from their effort, which is largely due commitment of our long-term staff members and the influx of new boarding faculty, who brought a flourish of positive energy to campus. During this special week, faculty enjoyed a campus filled with displays of recognition, refreshments, thoughtful gifts, special staff acknowledgements and student appreciation. "Follow the Yellow Brick Road"

Performing an iconic movie musical for a school summer production can be a tricky task, especially when the movie has been immortalized by many decades of television airings and stage adaptations. However, The Glenholme School's version of "The Wizard of Oz" certainly holds its own among tributes to the classic show. "The Wizard of Oz" tells the story of a misunderstood Kansas farm girl, Dorothy Gale, and her dog, Toto. After the Gales' insufferable spinster neighbor, Almira Gultch, threatens to take Toto away, Dorothy and Toto flee in search of a better life. However, Dorothy begins to have doubts and returns home just as a fierce tornado hits the Gales' farm. In the midst of the storm, Dorothy is struck on the head and, while unconscious, is transported to a mystical land "beyond the rainbow." There, she meets characters from her Kansas life, who have been magically transformed within her dreams. After traveling down the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City and defeating the Wicked Witch of the West, Dorothy and her friends meet the true Wizard of Oz, who rewards them with their heart's greatest desires - which, for Dorothy, is returning home to Kansas. The Glenholme interpretation of this classic movie musical features Amy as Dorothy Gale, whose energy, focus, and talent provides the glue for the show, and Jack as the Scarecrow, who, from his initial ramblings and wobbly jesters to his final tearful farewell, keeps the audience delightfully entertained. Other notable performances include Jake and Austin as The Tin Woodsman, Stephen and Nico as the Cowardly Lion, Masha as the Wicked Witch of the West, and Babette the dog as an adoable and well-behaved Toto. The costumes, particularly for Glinda, the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion, and the Tin Woodsman, are magnificent. The production also incorporates area children in the Munchkin Land scene as munchkins and lollipop guild players. Graduates Gathered at The Glenholme School

The Glenholme campus greeted nearly two dozen graduates and their family members on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 for the school's third annual Alumni Day. The afternoon occasion included a luncheon, visits with staff, a tour of the newly opened Center for the Arts, and a dress rehearsal of the student summer production, "The Wizard of Oz." This year's Alumni Day brought together the largest group of former Glenholme students and parents to date. In attendance were Devereux President and CEO, Robert Kreider, and Philip Darling, a student during the late 60s, a dedicated Glenholme supporter, and the honorary chairman of the Alumni Association. During a luncheon at The Commons, alumni, parents, and staff reminisced, shared their ambitions, and exchanged ideas for advancing the Alumni Association. The group then enjoyed a tour of The Center for the Arts, where they viewed the theater, the art gallery, and the music classroom. Executive Director, Maryann Campbell, spoke to the group, encouraging them to reflect upon their experiences at Glenholme: "Now that you have entered young adulthood, we hope you look back at your time spent here as something quite good. Some of you honor us with your efforts - by taking the knowledge that Glenholme has given you, and teaching young children what you have learned. May you continue to share Glenholme in positive ways." Afterwards, the guests enjoyed a full-dress rehearsal of the summer theatrical production, "The Wizard of Oz." The many moments of laughter and applause during the performance provided the ideal close to a joyous gathering. Camp Columbia - A Red Carpet Premiere

"Camp Columbia," a film by the 2011 Glenholme Movie Club, had its world premiere in The Center for the Arts on Thursday, August 4, 2011, with all of the red carpet glitz and glamour of a true Hollywood debut. The film's actors, directors, producers, screen writers, and crews - both production and sound - paraded down the red carpet, greeted their fans, smiled for the flashing cameras, and paused to sign autographs as they made their way into the theater for the first big screen showing of "Camp Columbia." The film tells the extraordinary story of six friends who, upon discovering a strange journal, embark on an adventure to solve the mystery surrounding Camp Columbia - a military base inexplicably abandoned forty years ago. Set in modern day New England, the color film flashes back to black and white images of the military camp and hospital during the late 1960s, where service men were suffering from a mysterious illness. A handful of student and staff cameos throughout the film provide just the right amount of comedic relief. Ultimately, "Camp Columbia" delivers a heartwarming finale, sure to please critics and audiences alike. The Glenholme Movie Club is a year-long project in which students produce an entire film, from concept to conclusion. The Movie Club not only provides students with an excellent forum to practice communication and teamwork, but also encourages them to harness and draw upon their own creativity, and to try new roles that they have not had the opportunity, or confidence, to attempt in the past. Now entering its sixth year, the Club continues to grow in popularity. Rated G, "Camp Columbia" is a definite "must see" for everyone in the Glenholme community. Mark Bonaguide, the Movie Club's instructor, told Glenholme newscasters that "it is, by far, our best production to date." Equestrian Program

One of the most rewarding aspects of working at The Glenholme School is having the opportunity to watch students grow and transform. Often, this occurs within the context of Glenholme's esteemed equestrian program, which provides an optimal environment for students to develop character values, social skills, and a positive self-image. Like many other animals, horses often have a calming and therapeutic presence. Glenholme students regularly forge strong bonds with the horses on campus, feeling most comfortable and secure when the animals are nearby. By caring for such massive creatures, students inevitably develop confidence in their own abilities, and learn the importance of responsibility, maturity, and hard work. As they learn to trust the horses, students also begin to trust others, and most importantly, themselves. The power of our equestrian program is illuminated by the story of a former Glenholme student, who entered the program as a reserved and disinterested child. He was remarkably passive, seemingly void of ambition or determination, and, although always obedient, never put forth any extra effort or energy when completing a task. That was, until he began participating in Glenholme's equestrian program. After a few short months of working with the horses, there was a noticeable change in the student's demeanor. He became more social, conveyed a greater degree of initiative and effort, and exuded a newfound confidence. Heather Perssonatti, the coordinator of the equestrian program, took note of these changes and selected the student to join her and five of his peers on a school sponsored trip to the Heart Six Guest Ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. During his stay at the ranch, the student faced obstacles that challenged his strength, courage, and ability to work with others. He faced his fears as he rode on steep and intricate trails, and learned to socialize with his peers during different group activities such as "Team Penning." During one ride, Ms. Perssonatti and the students found themselves on an extremely high and narrow trail. As she glanced over to the several hundred foot drop that lay mere inches away from her and the horse, Ms. Perssonatti became anxious. Her fears must have been apparent, as the student began consoling her and lending words of encouragement and support. He calmly offered reassurance and alleviated her fears. Looking back, Ms. Perssonatti considers this one the most meaningful moments she has ever experienced with a student. Essentially, the (horse)shoe was now on the other foot. Upon coming home from the ranch, Ms. Perssonatti attests that the student was completely transformed. He was hired to work part time at the campus barn, where he demonstrated considerable responsibility, work ethic, and passion. In his cottage and during school activities, he was now noticeably more social and engaged. This student, who was once in need of inspiration, began to inspire others. The Glenholme equestrian program enriches the lives of students, allowing them to make great strides not only in the barn, but also in their daily lives. We thank Ms. Perssonatti for sharing her talent and passion, and for motivating her students to grow and change for the better. Celebrating Summer Fun

The 2011 Summer Program at Glenholme has offered plenty excitement for students with an expansive array of summer activities and adventures spanning arts, drama, music, sports, go-karts, equestrian, and the creative campus-wide competition known as Color Clash. Since late June students have worked hard practicing their roles for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Scheduled to premier on Wednesday August 17, this delightfully entertaining, face-paced dramatization of L. Frank Baum classic adventure story of young Dorothy who finds herself lost in the bizarre and magical Land of Oz is sure to amuse the audience with the wicked witch, harmonizing munchkins, and certainly Dorothy, Toto, and their three friends. In early August, students have also found excitement and camaraderie in the annual Color Clash, where teams competed in challenges and events to earn points and earn the Color Clash title. The Apache Relay recently had the teams trekking across campus to contend in painting projects, puzzle-piece challenges, sports competitions, fitness tests, and even a little first-aide fun. The nearly week-long event had the teams strategizing for each afternoon's challenges with great enthusiasm. All the while, students have enjoyed the beautiful summer afternoons in Connecticut involved in zipping around the go-kart track, playing team sports including volleyball and softball, and many creative on-campus activities. In addition to the campus-wide fun at Glenholme, an abundance of off-campus trips to local attractions and special excursions to New York to partake in major league baseball games, the zoo, restaurants, Broadway have had the students' days filled with many pleasurable memories. Life Is a Cabaret!

On the evening of July 21, Glenholme's newly opened Center for the Arts hosted the much anticipated Summer Vocal Cabaret. Twelve students of Aaron-Noel Treppeda, Glenholme's vocal instructor, performed solos, duets, and sing-a-longs for an audience of family, friends, and staff. The program included a variety of Broadway hits, pop songs, and rock classics, and highlighted the diverse and extraordinary talents of the Glenholme student body. Throughout the show, emcees Matt and Austin kept the audience energized with witty banter and comedic introductions. Among the many amazing solos were Steve's rendition of "Luck be a Lady," Amy's performance of "Journey to the Past," and Jake's delivery of "The Wizard and I." Other memorable numbers included Matt and Steve's duet of "Singing in the Rain," and an ensemble performance of "IFeel the Earth Move," featuring Chandler Klein. "...I'm Going to Disney World!"

This past May, the Class of 2011 took a well-deserved break from academics to celebrate all of their hard work and accomplishments in sunny Orlando, Florida. Accompanied by three staff, nine members of the senior class visited Walt Disney World for four days of rides, fireworks, food, and fun! The Disney adventure began with a jaunt to Epcot Center to watch one of the theme park's mesmerizing light shows. The group then visited Hollywood Studios, where George Lucas enthusiasts were delighted to find themselves surrounded by battalions of storm troopers during the park's weekend-long Star Wars celebration. After going on all of their favorite rides at Magic Kingdom and exploring Animal Kingdom, the group cooled off on the water slides at Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach. When the group returned to campus, they raved about their time at Disney. One student told staff that it was the best trip he had ever gone on. As a special tradition for Glenholme seniors, the Disney trip is the perfect way to celebrate the end of high school and the beginning of countless new possibilities! Movie Club

The Glenholme Movie Club is a year-long project in which students work through the entire movie making process from concept to conclusion. The club offers students an excellent opportunity to build cooperation and team-work skills. It also encourages students to draw on their own creativity and challenges them to try new roles that they have not had the opportunity, or confidence, to attempt in the past. The Movie Club is in its fifth year of operation and has completed four movies; Don't be Such a Drama Queen, a teen drama; A True Badminton Story, a comedy about high-stakes underground badminton; Quarantine, a medical mystery about a strange illness affecting a school's student body; and Remote Thinking, a delightfully funny, wacky and heartfelt tale of a young boy's fantastic journey through a mysterious world. This year the club is working to bring to life Camp Columbia, a movie about six friends who discover a mysterious journal that leads them on an adventure to solve a 40-year mystery concerning an abandoned military base. Now encompassing a full year to complete their project, the students of the Movie Club successfully outshine their work from prior years with their incredible effort. The Big Green Truck Caters to Campus

The Big Green Truck catered to campus on Wednesday, June 8. The traveling wood-fired brick oven pizzeria treated the entire campus to an assortment of gourmet pizza, salad, soda, icy-sweet gelato, and cappuccino. A plethora of toppings complimented the handmade, gooey, thin crust pizza. Several favorites included mashed potato and bacon, garlic bread, buffalo chicken, bacon and sausage, chicken and spinach, and eggplant with carmelized onions. For dessert, students had their pick of delicious coconut, mango, chocolate, vanilla, raspberry, or lemon gelato. The outdoor feast was a big hit with the staff and students alike. One student gushed, "I love this gelato. I couldn't have asked for anything more refreshing than this on a hot day." Another student simply commented, "This is absolutely fantastico." We extend our deepest thanks to the generous and creative families who supported this impromptu Live Auction idea: Development Board members Rick and Debbie Doucette and Doug and Ellen Bowen, and Glenholme parents Richard and Janet Livingston, Roy and Claudia Loomis, and Kevin and Connie Michels. One student expressed our sentiments well in his thank you note to the donors: "Lunch was quite enjoyable, but it would have been better if your presence was there." Glamorous gowns, glitzy vests, a few top hats and even the clicking of cameras; you guessed it - it was a Night on the Red Carpet for the Glenholme prom-goers. Their star-worthy evening of Saturday, May 21st began with a pre-prom reception in the Glenholme Music Room complete with parents, pizzazz and paparazzi befitting Hollywood celebrity. The lovely reception provided a heart-warming opportunity to see the couples and classmates in their formal attire, snap some fabulous keepsake photos before they were whisked away in the awaiting stretch limousine. Their destination, The Washington Club, opened its doors for the special night. Once there, the twenty-three prom-goers enjoyed a beautifully catered meal and hours of music, dancing and merriment. The climax of the evening arrived just before midnight, the announcement of the royal court and with that Jakhai and Maggie were crowned as King and Queen. Academic Fair Goes Outdoors

Academic aficionados had their curiosities quenched at Glenholme's annual Academic Fair on Thursday, May 26, 2011. Awaiting everyone under an enormous tent in the courtyard was an astounding showcase of demonstrations, models, observations, experiments, and research projects in arts, sciences, mathematics, music and more. After months of immeasurable effort theorizing, researching, experimenting, and collecting, the Academic Fair put students' hypotheses and presentation abilities to the test as they offered their findings in fantastic fashion to family, friends and faculty. In addition to the presentations, several performances took place in the center of the tent. Jugglers Mike and Amy worked with Rebecca Silver for a demonstration in dexterity and concentration and later, Jake and Jack sang an encouraging song for their Music and Values project. Glenholme believes the experiences gained through participation in the Academic Fair are essential to the educational development of students. By participating, students can not only gain new knowledge and skills, but also expand their educational experiences of the classroom. Academic fair projects encourage students to design and complete projects which will promote critical thinking skills and foster creativity. This type of experience is crucial to the development of student knowledge and encourages them to work together in a cooperative manner with peers, teachers, parents and other individuals. The Academic Fair is an all-encompassing experience for Glenholme students and supports many values of the school by promoting personal responsibility, respect for diversity, fairness of others, family involvement, and spirit of unity. Each year the campus anticipates the unparalleled educational event only the Academic Fair can provide. The Grand Opening of The Center for the Arts - A World of New Possibilities for Glenholme Students

On Friday, May 13, 2011, the Glenholme community gathered together for the highly anticipated Grand Opening of The Center for the Arts. Addressing the audience, Glenholme's Executive Director, Maryann Campbell, spoke passionately of the importance of the Arts to the students at Glenholme, and of the many benefits - academic, emotional, intellectual, and social - that flow from a strong Arts program. Ms. Campbell detailed the decade-long process of creating this remarkable space, beginning with a sermon at a small church in Roxbury, CT, during which a generous donor became acquainted with The Glenholme School. With the support of this individual, the Development Board, parents, staff, students, and countless others, a plan for the art center developed. During Parents' Weekend of 2009, Ms. Campbell broke ground alongside two special guests - James Marsden and Jessica Biel. This year, we were honored to have Jim Carrey and Tracy Morgan attend Parents' Weekend to lend their support. Glenholme is deeply grateful to these celebrities and to all of our supporters, for helping to make The Center for the Arts a reality. Designed in the colonial style of the late 1890s, the 10,000 square-foot building boasts two visual art galleries, a 299-seat theater, quality sound and lighting systems, a control room, and ample space for rehearsals and professional performances. After her remarks, Ms. Campbell invited the members of the Development Board to join her on stage for the ceremonial ribbon cutting. David O. Russell, George Grappotte, Mary Ann Bartels, Doug and Ellen Bowen, Robin Baron, Alice Kane, and Darla Quinton took their places center stage as two students stretched a gold ribbon taught. Ms. Campbell presented the two-foot ceremonial scissors to Mr. Russell and Ms. Baron, and together, they cut the ribbon. With that, The Center for the Arts and a world of possibilities for the Glenholme community were opened. "The completion of the Center for the Arts is a statement of confidence in Glenholme and will have an incredible impact on our future and the future of all students of the school. This building is essential to our mission of making the arts a vital, effective, and ongoing part of every student's life at Glenholme," said Maryann Campbell. "We are grateful for the extraordinary support for the school and the confidence expressed in our vision for the future." A Night of Laughter, Emotion, and Giving Back

It was another special night for Glenholme when parents, faculty, and supporters gathered for the Live Auction event at the Heritage Hotel in Southbury, CT. The excitement began when Tracy Morgan, star of Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock, arrived as an honored guest, and three special parents were presented with awards acknowledging their tireless efforts and many contributions to the Glenholme community. After everyone enjoyed a delicious meal, parent Mary Lou Cordaro gave a heartfelt and powerful speech about the impact Glenholme has had on her and her son's lives. When the auction got under way, there was an incredible selection of trips, tours, adventures, and honors up for grabs to the highest bidder. Tracy Morgan took up the microphone to personally auction off several items, including a pair of exclusive tickets to the season finale of Saturday Night Live. Throughout the night, he performed some of his favorite jokes, autographed T-shirts for the auction, and playfully bid for a few of the items against his friend, David O. Russell. While the results were being tallied, the president of the Development Board, Rick Doucette, brought the crowd to their feet with an impassioned speech about his son's experience at Glenholme, and three additional parent awards were presented, including the coveted "Parents of the Year." Two days of humor, emotion, unprecedented celebrity excitement, and incredible generosity resulted in another extremely successful Parents' Weekend, with over $220,000 raised for The Center for the Arts Campaign. Jim Carrey: A Home Run for Glenholme

Only an incurable extrovert like Jim Carrey could top the excitement of Saturday morning. In true comedic-style, he made a zany entrance into the lunch tent by zipping his way on a Segway through hundreds of students, parents, faculty and obstacles to find a home among the students on the only available performance space, the small stage at the head of the tent. Mr. Carrey graciously addressed the crowd during lunch, joined the audience during a parent and child improv performance in The Center for the Arts, and even united with the students to take on the adults in the traditional parent vs. child softball game. His highly enthusiastic batting, base running, and fielding efforts not only entertained the crowd, but also helped to seal the most memorable win for his team in Parents' Weekend history. During the entire afternoon, Mr. Carrey was incredibly generous with his time. He gregariously signed autographs, posed for photos with students, parents and faculty, and even made a surprise contribution to the Live Auction later that evening in the form of an autographed stuffed penguin replica promoting his new movie, "Mr. Popper's Penguins." After personally arranging a group photo, Mr. Carrey addressed the students with words of encouragement. He advised them to "find what you love to do and make a career of it." Later that evening, Mr. Carrey posted the group photograph on-line and tweeted: "Spent the day with my good friend Matt and his pals at The Devereux Glenholme School in Connecticut." Parents' Weekend: Campus-Wide Excitement

On May 14, the campus came to life with the excitement and energy of Parents' Weekend 2011. Throughout campus, games and activities were set to a background of spring greenery and flowers in spectacular bloom. In a head-to-head competition, the students bested their parents in an intense game of basketball, and families enjoyed a student art show, caricatures, equestrian presentations and riding opportunities, and fitness exercises. Meanwhile go-kart races, Segways, rock climbing, and the zip-line provided entertainment for our more adventurous guests. In The Center for the Arts, student bands played original pieces and classic songs, students performed in a variety show, and parents and students joined forces for a truly entertaining afternoon improv performance. Later in the afternoon, with some very special celebrity support, the students secured a win over the staff and parent team in a lively game of softball. Many families forged friendships during this special day on campus, as new parents were welcomed and guided by families who had experienced Parents' Weekend in years past. Parents and faculty playfully competed and collaborated while bidding on items in the Silent Auction, all of which were generously donated by members and supporters of the Glenholme community. Generating an incredible $28,000 for The Center for the Arts, this year's Silent Auction had the single highest outcome in the seven-year history of Parents' Weekend, and is a testament to the dedication of our families and faculty. A Celebration!

Glenholme's Seventh Annual Parents' Weekend began with an extraordinary student performance in The Center for the Arts coordinated by Arts staff Matt Delong, Bill Toy, and Rebecca Silver. Aptly titled "Celebration," the show featured a collection of heart-felt songs, upbeat dances, and funny dialogue - all of which were an absolute pleasure to watch. The curtain opened to reveal the chorus dressed in colorful, quirky outfits from every decade. As students pretended to insert coins into a large jukebox (manned by student Elias' alias, the smooth talking DJ "Dr. B"), the audience was met with a lively selection of songs from the 50s and beyond, including "Shake, Rattle, and Roll," "Rock and Roll Is Here to Stay," and "Don't Stop Believin'." Countless solos and duets showcased student talent throughout the performance. Dressed as Glinda (the Good Witch) and Elphaba (the Wicked Witch) from the Broadway musical Wicked, student Jake and staff member Heather Perssonatti gave a truly flawless performance of the song "For Good." Other highlights included the Men's Singing Group's renditions of the "Star Spangled Banner" and "America the Beautiful,"a fierce Elvis impression by student Matt, and "The Beatles in Review" - a lively medley with which the audience was encouraged to sing along. In between numbers, students Jessica, David, Amy, and Jordan read exceptionally written original poetry from Parent Appreciation Week and Poetry Appreciation Month. As the perfect kick off to Parents' Weekend, this performance was definitely worth celebrating!
