Steve Nash, NBA Superstar, St. Michaels University School Grad

In 2010, Our Kids Go to School talked to Steve Nash about his experience at St. Michael's University School and how it affected his career and personal growth.

Our Kids: How has an independent school helped you realize your potential?

Steve Nash: Well, obviously, being an athlete, my true passion was sports. So, on the one hand I remember all the teammates, the games and travelling with the different teams, and on the other hand I really remember how important it was academically for me to meet the standards and be able to go to university and therefore setting up the opportunities that I've had within basketball. So, I think it's easy for me to recall the sporting memories, but for me I think the academics were as important if not more.

Our Kids: What opportunities have opened up for you as a result of going to an independent school?

Steve Nash: I think one of the positive aspects of the school for me was the diversity. It had a boarding population of kids from around the world. It gave us an understanding and a cultural sensitivity I think that was more difficult to find elsewhere. So, that was nice for us to learn lessons of other cultures and travels and for us to be exposed to that diversity gave us a need to kind of go out there and have a thirst for the world.

Our Kids: What is your fondest memory at independent school?

Steve Nash: I really enjoyed my two years at the school. A lot of fine teachers, lots of great people. Always things happening.

Steve Nash is the point guard for the Phoenix Suns, the NBA's Most Valuable Player of 2005 and 2006, a business entrepreneur, and the founder of the Steve Nash Foundation to help underprivileged children.
