In this hands-on studio program, young artists will develop and refine a variety of hand-building clay techniques: pinching, coiling, slab construction and modeling. Students will learn surface decoration techniques as well, working with underglazes, and low-fire glazes. Past projects have included mystical creatures, bobble head self-portraits, cake containers, pop art sculptures, miniature bookshelves, skeleton mobiles, gargoyles and grotesques, dinosaurs, clay masks, portrait vessels, portrait tiles and imaginative houses. While the focus is on hand-building techniques, students also get to try throwing on a potter’s wheel.Young artists will develop their artistic skills while having fun discovering their own personal style. Working from still life, photographs, images from art history and/or independent themes and ideas, students will be introduced to specific drawing and painting fundamentals and techniques. These include line drawing, value, shape, pattern, texture, shading, highlighting, colour perspective and collage. While experimenting with an exciting variety of artist’s tools, media and techniques, students will learn to explore and trust their creative instincts.
